Research paperYou are required to write a 5-page (double-spaced, standard tabs) research paper about a musical culture NOT covered in this course. Areas covered in this course include India, Indonesia, Japan, Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, so you can choose any part of the world OTHER than these. Some areas to consider are: Native America, Polynesia, Australia, China, Korea, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Arctic Circle…. wherever, as long as it’s not covered in our course. For this assignment, please use Nettl’s 3-part model, addressed in “Unit 1: Introduction” and Chapter 1 in our textbook. Focus on the Sounds, Behaviors and Ideas or Conceptions that govern the sounds and behaviors of the musical genre/activity you choose. It’s best if you stick to a specific genre or ensemble from whatever region you choose for this research paper. For example, if you wanted to write about music from Spain, don’t try to summarize all Spanish music (too broad, too big) but pick a specific genre or activity to focus on, such as Flamenco. Want to research Hawaiian music? Stick to hula or string bands. The point is, focus on one genre or activity from a region and give in-depth details, not just a broad, surface cultural overview.Sound:What sounds are you hearing? Talk about the instruments (and voices) of the musical genre/activity. What are they made of and what do they sound like? Are there any rules or restrictions surrounding these instruments, like who can play or when one can play? Can you comment on the texture and form of the music? Texture refers to layers of activity. How many musicians are present and how do they relate to one another? Form refers to how the music is organized and presented,. How long does a performance last and how are the melodies and rhythms arranged. Lastly, what does the music sound like to you, the outsider?Behaviors:What activities are associated with this musical genre/activity? What are people doing while this musical activity is happening? Is there a specific purpose or function surrounding this music, or is it just for enjoyment/entertainment? Does this musical activity have any behavioral restrictions regarding religion, age or gender? Is everyone participating communally or are the musicians/singers/dancers presenting music to an audience…. why? Lastly, can you draw any connections to musical behaviors in your life or culture?Ideas/Conceptions:What ideas or conceptions govern the sounds and behaviors of your chosen musical genre/activity? Why are people creating this music and why are people participating? Address ideas surrounding history, culture and musical evolution. Most musical genres throughout the world express indigenous and foreign, or outsider aspects. What traits are uniquely regional, or indigenous, and what traits are coming from an outside influence and why? Again, almost all music has a combination of both! How have politics, religion or human migration affected this musical genre/activity? Lastly, can you relate what you learned to your own life experiences? This assignment is worth a lot of points (120 points) and required to pass the course.

WORKSHOP DRAFT: GENRE ANALYSIS REPORT

Write a formal business report that researches, analyzes, and reports on your investigation into one business-related genre. Reflect on your choices and techniques.

RHETORICAL SITUATION

Your audience for this report will be business writers.

Your purpose will be to introduce them to your chosen genre and provide information that will help them to become more aware of how the genre can be flexible in different rhetorical situations so that they can become more effective writers.

You may choose a more specific audience and purpose depending on the genres you analyze; however, you must still write to business writers (not your classmates, not students, and not your instructor).

ANALYSIS STEPS

Decide what one business-related genre you would like to research. Begin your research and your analysis. The below steps will guide your analysis.

FIND SAMPLES

Find several examples of one genre. You can use genres I have collected for you here, or you can find your own samples of the genre. I recommend you work with at least three to four (3-4) examples of the genre.

ANALYZE RHETORICAL SITUATIONS

Analyze the similarities and differences in rhetorical situations. Think about their contexts, audiences, purposes, and personas. Use the questions in Ch 2.2 Rhetorical Analysis to guide you.

ANALYZE RHETORICAL CHOICES

Analyze the similarities and differences in rhetorical choices. Use the questions in Ch 3.1 Rhetorical Choices  to guide you.

CONSIDER GENRE CHARACTERISTICS

Consider how the genre fits the criteria discussed in Ch 6.1 Genres (flexible, adaptable, etc.) based on what you found in your analysis. For instance, if you find that different audiences cause writers to make different rhetorical choices, you might conclude that the genre is adaptable to different audiences.

UNDERSTAND THAT THE TEXT IS A GENRE

Understand how the genre, despite any differences, is a genre – a typical response to a recurring rhetorical situation.

FORMAT & LENGTH

Full name on the title page
2000 words minimum; this is a strict requirement. Anything less than 2000 words will not earn full credit.
Follow the formatting requirements of formal report writing in Ch 13.5 Business Reports .
Other formatting of your report, including line spacing, font, color, and margins, is your choice. You may want to consider using a Google Document template found here.

REPORT CONTENT

At minimum, you must include the following report components and content:

Title page
Table of contents
Executive summary
Introduction
Bodydiscusses at least one rhetorical situation component (audience, purpose, etc.)
discusses at least one rhetorical choice
discusses at least one genre characteristic (see Ch 6.1 Genres )

Conclusion
References

Two visuals (minimum)

SOURCES

No specific type or quantity of source material is required. However, I do expect that you will use a variety of primary and secondary sources.

Primary sources will be examples of writing from the companies/organizations (i.e. the examples of the genres). I recommend that you work with at least three to four samples of the genre.
Secondary sources are those that may discuss different aspects of the companies (e.g. a newspaper article about the company). Secondary sources may also include any of our assigned readings or handouts. You may use any additional source material that will be helpful for your research.
Visuals are also sources. All visuals must be cited (see below). You should also follow the guidelines for figures in Ch 7.3 Figures & Tables of the webbook.

CITATION

All source material (including handouts used as secondary sources and visuals) should be given appropriate attribution and citation.

You may use any documentation style format (e.g. MLA, APA, etc.).
Appropriate documentation/citation will include in-text (parenthetical) citations and some sort of reference page/section.
You will be evaluated on correct citation. You can find helpful information in Ch 6.5 Sources & Citation.
