Wow, fairytales right? There are three variations of fairytales that I want you to consider, (1) The Disney adaptation, (2) The literary or Grimm’s Brother original, and (3) the RomCom. I’d like you to choose one, and identify the conventions that define the genre; in particular what separates it from the other two. Because while the three can overlap, they also appeal to different audiences. Choose at least 1-2 things to discuss. Secondly, I want you to create your own fairytale within that specific subdivision. You just give me a short summary, but it should include the conventions you just identified. So for example, if I was doing the Disney version, I might look up a classic fairytale and talk of all the ways I would twist the story to adapt it for a Disney audience. Even if, say, a student is not pleased with her genre composition(maybe her collage is less than perfect, or her brief documentary or her videoad is not exactly what she’d hoped, or she didn’t plan her time well, or she didn’thave ample resources), she can still do the thoughtful work in her Statement thatwe want to see in a first-year writing course. Because being able to reflect on andconstructively critique one’s own work is a lifelong skill that will serve our studentswell beyond our classrooms.239the quote about perception and reality, I ask viewers to thinkabout how the collage illustrates that concept. My goal isthat my audience will ponder what each part of the collagerepresents and come to logical conclusions about the collage’srepresentation of gratitude.During my research, the following passage stood out for me: “Agrateful outlook does not require a life full of material comfortsbut rather an interior attitude of thankfulness regardless oflife circumstances” (Emmons and Shelton, “Gratitude” 465). Iwanted to convey this idea visually by emphasizing contrastingexperiences; a negative or challenging objective reality is representedby the black background, which is supposed to have afeel of encompassing and surrounding the sitting figure, which isasymmetrically placed within the piece. The figure herself is creatinga positive perception of her reality, the potential of whichis represented by the landscape and the rainbow, which archesupward and out—drawing the eye forward and to a higherpoint. A Spanish study confirmed that positive affect rises inpersons who practice gratitude, which was found in a previousstudy (Martinez-Marti, Avia, and Hernandez-Lloreda 893).Also, the landscape refers to the fact that grateful peopleexperience a positive memory bias—they are more likely torecall positive memories, similar to the negative memory biasexperienced in depression (Watkins 63). The idea of creation isalso suggested by the plant, whose roots surround the woman’shead. Her efforts to be thankful and practice gratitudeare nourishing the plant, which grows upward, changing herreality, subjective and objective, for the better. The figure’s poseis reminiscent of The Thinker, a nineteenth-century sculptureby Rodin, which suggests that changing one’s attitude takesintentional, active thought. “People adapt quickly to positivechanges in their lives and thus derive diminishing happinessreturns” (“Positive Thinking”), so it may be that practicinggratitude helps counteract that adaptation.Kipp, Artist’s Statement, ContinuedTHE RHETORICALSITUATIONTHE GENRE’SCONVENTIONSPurposeKipp’s purpose is topersuade readersthat “practicinggratitude can makeus happier” and thathis collage furthersthat goal.
