This is the last activity for ME/Engr 195a writing assignment. This activity is entirely online In this module, you will examine how engineers through their work can help lead to greater equality for those with disabilities. As you watch these videos and read the articles in this module, think about how you as an engineer can be involved in design to help equal the playing field for people with disabilities. First, let’s learn about what Assistive Technology is. Start by watching the following video. It gives a broad overview of what Assistive Technology is and the types of tools it includes: “Assistive Technology: Opening Doors to Independence” Next, follow up by reading the following website that provides additional about AT, including links to professional organizations and a discussion of how people pay for AT: “What is AT?” The Assistive Technology Industry Association publishes a peer-reviewed journal of research in this field. To get an idea of the kinds of detailed research that is done, read at least three abstracts of articles in the journal “Assistive Technology Outcomes and Benefits.” Some selected articles can be read without subscribing to their journal here. There are special AT tools developed for the very young. Providing appropriate technology to this age group is especially important because infants and young children are developing crucial skills at a fast pace. Take a look at the link below. “Assistive Technology for Infants, Toddlers, and Young Children with Disabilities” Next, let’s look at some specific engineering achievements that have leveled the playing field for those with disabilities. Check out the following websites. o 5 Mobile Technologies Help Level the Playing Field for People with Disabilities (Watch the five embedded videos in addition to reading the article. ME 195A Individual Writing Assignment 3Choose one technology related to mechanical engineering not mentioned in any of the videos in the online module that helps the disabled. Write a minimum 300-page word essay presenting the technology. Discuss how this technology helps to promote greater equality and social justice in the U.S. among the disabled. Cite any references (at least two).Every day, people go about their lives without being grateful that they do not suffer from a disability and neglect the underprivileged that do have them. A disability is not necessarily a negative aspect and it does not make a person any less than someone who does not have any, but it opens up opportunities for advancements in this field. People who originally had no disabilities can develop a disability such as those that lose a limb from unforeseen and tragic events. Through major advancements in prosthetic arms, this technology has promoted greater equality and social justice to those who suffer from this condition by having greater accessibility and being equal to their peers.Prosthetic arms have become more and more realistic compared to their mechanical and non-electrical versions of them. From fiber constructed prosthetics to composite, plastic, and aluminum constructed prosthetics, prosthetics has had a long history of evolution through the years (Norton, 2007). Prosthetics in the early Egyptian civilizations were used as a sense of wholeness instead of restoring functionality to that lost limb (Norton, 2007). Notable advancements in prosthetics have been made after World War II where many of the war veterans demonstrated dissatisfaction with theavailability of prosthetic technologies (Norton, 2007). With greater demand for prosthetic technologies mainly in their appearance and functionality, people like Easton LaChappelle have created revolutionary prosthetic arms that have given users the ability to have a functional arm. In an interview with Easton LaChappelle with BBC News (2015), LaChappelle’s design allows users to control the arm with their thoughts, making the movement of the arm more natural in comparison to a human arm. The user is able to make the prosthetic arm as if it was their own and are able to do everyday tasks that would be nearly impossible to do with other existing prosthetics (BBC News, 2015). With complexity added to prosthetic arms, there are tradeoffs in designing these arms that have led to higher cost in response to acquiring better aesthetic appearance and functionality.Although prosthetic arms can be costly, LaChappelle’s design has brought equality and social justice to those who have lost an arm, regardless of class, race, religion, or sex. An average prosthetic arm can cost about $60,000 while LaChappelle’s prototype cost about $350 to make, which is an affordable option to anyone seeking a prosthetic arm (Mosbergen, 2015). Furthermore, LaChappelle has made the design and the software open source so that anyone can make the arm themselves at no cost (Mosbergen, 2015). This arm has a great advantage over other existing prosthetic arms because this arm is free and can be 3D printed. This further lowers the burden that people, especially parents, have to deal with paying the staggering bill for the prosthetic arm. In fact, parents who are looking for affordable options for their children often weigh the options between giving their child a sense of normality and giving them a sense of normality without functionality (Hawkins, 2015). Thus, the LaChappelle’s prosthetic armhas given hope to people who cannot afford an expensive product that allows a user to only open and close the arm. It has given confidence and hope to people like Rich Stewart who lost his arm in an accident and had to settle with a hook prosthetic arm (Mosbergen, 2015). In any assistive technology, cost is a factor when determining what devices are affordable.Prosthetic arms have given people a sense of completeness where they can make the arm as a part of their body functionality. People no longer have to settle for prosthetic arms that will only allow them to open and close it. LaChappelle has made it possible to move the arm naturally through the user’s thoughts and has made it an affordable option. When engineers design new prosthetic arms, there are always tradeoffs but there is also the responsibility of doing what is right to bring equality and justice among all.ReferencesBBC News.
