PSYC 4033: Guidelines for Term Paper
General Guidelines:
• ENTIRE paper must be APA format. This includes title page, running head,
page numbers, headings, in-text citations, and references. Use OWL Purdue
APA (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/) as a
reference.
o You do NOT need an abstract in your final paper.
• Paper should be no less than 8 pages and no greater than 10 pages.
o The title page and reference page(s) are NOT included in this page
count.
• Use Times New Roman, 12-point font, one-inch margins, double spacing
• Papers with numerous typos or grammatical errors that make the paper
incomprehensible will receive a failing grade. Quotations are prohibited!
o Use the writing center if you struggle with grammar.
• Paper will include two main parts: Introduction and Methods.
o These sections should be similar to the introduction and methods
section that you would see in a scientific journal article.
• Plagiarism will receive an automatic ZERO! This means that your grade will
immediately drop to an 80% in the class, so I do not recommend this.
Guidelines for Introduction Section:
• First, summarize the current literature that is relevant to your topic.
o This will take up the most space in your introduction.
• Second, provide a rationale for your study.
o Why is this study needed?
o What gap in the field does it fill?
• Third, discuss the hypotheses of your study.
o You must show how these hypotheses developed from the work that
has already been done in this area. In other words, you cannot simply
hypothesize something because it makes logical sense to you. You
must have support for that hypothesis.
• The introduction section will probably be between 5 and 7 pages (i.e., 5
pages if your paper is 8-pages long and 7 pages if your paper is 10-pages
long).
Guidelines for Methods Section:
• You must have a “participants” section.
o Discuss the number of participants you will have and the types of
participants (e.g., age, gender, diagnosis, category like student or
parent, etc.).
o Tell how you will recruit these participants. Where will you find your
participants?
o Discuss any criteria that may exclude someone from your study. For
example, if you are doing a study that requires reading, then you may
choose to exclude someone who cannot read.
• You must have a “measures” section.
o Discuss the tasks that your participants will complete in DETAIL. I
should be able to clearly understand how the task operates. If you are
creating your own task, then state this. If you are using a task that
someone else created, then you need to reference this source.
o If you are including a questionnaire, discuss this questionnaire. If you
are creating the measure, then you need to state that and in an
appendix show the actual measure (i.e., the questions and the
response scale for each question). If you are using a questionnaire
from someone else, then you need to reference this source and
describe the questionnaire.
• You must have a “procedures” section.
o When a participant shows up to complete your study, what does it
look like? What do they do first? What do the do second? And so on…
Walk me through your entire study (in a succinct manner).
• The methods section will probably be about 3 pages long. It can be more or
less, but your introduction should definitely be longer than your methods
section.
References:
• Again, must be APA style.
• You must have at least 5 peer-reviewed empirical journal articles.
o These are NOT websites. They are NOT books (including your
textbook). They are NOT magazines.
o These ARE articles found on a library database such as PsychInfo that
include an introduction, methods, results, and discussion section.
o You can use journal articles that are a review of the literature or are
theoretical in nature, but this would need to be supplemental to your
5 research articles.
o Your grade will not be good if you miss this point!! You cannot
discuss previous literature or design a good study without looking at
journal articles.
