The goal of this assignment is to show that you understand how the natural sciences approach the world around us, what types of problems it can solve, and what it cannot. This Week’s Scenario: A storm is coming. For the past week, meteorologists have been tracking the growth of Tropical Storm Agatha as it’s slowly made its way across the Atlantic Ocean. Yesterday, the National Weather Service (NWS) announced that Agatha has been upgraded to a Category 3 hurricane, with wind speeds in excess of 110 miles per hour. Based on projections, the storm will likely make landfall on the United States within the next 72 hours. However, it’s unclear yet whether the storm will turn to the west, in the direction of Texas and the Gulf States, or to the north, in the direction of the Carolinas and the rest of the East Coast. In the past, storms of this kind, given these atmospheric conditions, have turned both ways. You are a scientist working with the NWS, and you’ve been tasked with developing a theory about how storms of this kind will track. Using everything you’ve learned this week, describe how you would go about developing a theory of storm tracks that would help the NWS better predict Agatha’s future track. In order to complete this assignment, describe how you would complete the 5 stages of scientific inquiry for this problem. Remember, you are not actually doing the science here; you don’t have sufficient information to do so. Rather, your goal is to explain how you might proceed through these stages of inquiry if you were to do the science: Observation (What facts do you have in front of you? Hint: Think about the hurricane.) Hypothesis (Make an educated guess that fits the facts you have.) Experimentation (How might you test your hypothesis? Hint: Look to the past.) Theory (Generalize a theory about when hurricanes will turn north or go west.) Verification/Falsification (How might you prove your theory correct or prove it false?) Your response should be at least 2 pages, and if you reference any readings, be sure to use current MLA formatting.
