Literature-Based Projects I. The literature-based projects will be evaluated on the following products: 1. A 10 page (max) Literature Review (200 points) 2. Public Oral Defense- PowerPoint presentation (200 points) II. Use the literature review section descriptions, literature review template, and grading rubric (provided below), in addition to the information from your CREATE method assignments to develop your Literature Review. III. Be sure to ask questions as you develop your written product. Mandatory Sections:Each literature review will be based on a specific topic as determined by the student and will include the sections listed below: Table of Content:The format for the table of content is provided in the literature review template. Adjust the page numbers based on your final document. Student Demographics:The purpose of the demographics section is to allow the reader to learn about the author. These statements are often included in graduate-level thesis documents. In this section, students will include a statement describing their background and future goals. Examples of items that may be included, but not limited to, are as follows: students name, home town, high school, why The schoolwas selected for undergraduate studies, any organizations in which the student participated that provided a meaningful experience, plans after graduation, and future goals. Abstract:The abstract is a concise overview of the literature review. The major topic and the specific issues addressed in the review will be described in this section. The project question and hypothesis should also be introduced. The abstract should be between 150-250 words in length. Introduction:The introduction will provide a brief presentation of the biologically relevant topic and hypothesis and will provide background information of the field being discussed, as well as specific points presented in the review. The introduction should be complete enough that any reader will be able to ask tangible questions regarding the subject. The introduction should not be longer than 2 pages. Review of Literature and Discussion:This section should be subdivided into smaller sections (subsections) that discuss in detailthe specific issues being addressed. This section should also discussat leasttwo (2) pieces of data (2 figures, OR 2 two tables, OR a mixture of 1 figure and 1 table) from your primary journal articles. Figures and tables can be copied and pasted from the references into the Appendixsection. Do NOT paste copies of figures or tables in this section. Proper credit must be givento each figure that is copied. Figures do not count in the total page count. Conclusion:This portion of the review should neatly wrap-up the major points put forth in the discussion. You should also provide a critical discussionof the articles you reviewed. For example, did the data presented in one article support or contradict the data presented in another article? Did you agree with the author’s findings in the articles you reviewed? Why or why not?Based on your review of the articles, did the data support your project hypothesis? Explain how you came to your conclusion. Be sure to properly cite the article(s) that you discuss. (1-1.5 pages) References:Each literature review must cite at least 5 primary articles in the proper format. Additional articles may be used.The APA format will be used for this assignment. Please see the following link for more instruction on APA formatting Purdue Online Writing Lab: **References are NOT included in the 10 page limit. Figures/Tables: Figures should be inserted in an appendix at the endof the review and notembedded in the text. Each figure should be numbered and accompanied by the corresponding figure legend from the article. The figure legend should completely describe the information presented in the figure. Additional Notes on Formatting: 1. Page numbers will be added to the bottom, center of each page. 2. Page margins will be 1 inch on all sides. 3. Font will be Times New Roman or Arial. 4. Font size for the body of the text and subheadings (eg. Introduction) will be 12 inch. Font size for figure legends and tables may be no smaller than 10 inch. 5. Bold, italics and underline may be used as appropriate. 6. The abstract must not exceed 250 words (characters not included in this limit). 7. Tables and figures are to be inserted at the end of the review in Appendix A and not within the text. 8. Additional appendices may be included. Confirm with the faculty advisor that the appendices are appropriate. Note, additional appendices will be added afterAppendix A (figures/tables discussed in the text). 9. All text should be double spaced with the exception of figure legends and tables which may be single spaced.
