Paper #1: Applying Theory to Society

In your opinion, which of the three modern sociological theories/perspectives/approaches we reviewed (symbolic interactionism, class conflict or functionalism) best explains what is happening in response to the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN?

To answer this question, you must conduct independent research on what happened to George Floyd (find credible, reliable and relevant sources!), and explain in sociological terms how the sociological theory applies to the facts.
You are making a fact-based argument. Therefore, each paper must contain four ingredients:
1.A statement of the issue. You must frame the question in terms of why it is being asked, or what it makes you think about.
2. A citation of the evidence you will apply (fact-based argument). You must correctly cite the evidence and show it is reliable, credible and relevant.
3. A discussion of the application of the evidence to the prompt. In this section, you must specifically identify the RELEVANCE of your evidence.
4. A brief conclusion. In this section, you must answer the question that was posed to you.
Grading Criteria
Length (one page substantive) = 5 points
Grammar/Spelling (no more than 3 errors) = 5 points
Issue = 5 points
Evidence (with proper citation using APA/MLA) = 10 points
Application (relevance, answering the question) = 10 points
Conclusion (summary) = 5 points
Total = 40 points
B. Paper #2: Transparency

Paper #2: Transparency

Consider our author, Malcolm Gladwell, and his sociological theory that our culture informs how we interpret facial expressions. (Talking to Strangers, chapters 6-8). Our text shares that our in-groups and out-groups provide the interpretation/standards by which we make these judgments. (Text, 126-141).
Consider the phenomenon of “RBF” (resting bitch face) and whether you have judged someone based solely on their facial expressions.
In your opinion, is Gladwell correct? Do we judge each other based on our cultural interpretation of a facial expression? Does it work or cause conflict in the U.S.? Is it easy or hard to tell, just by looking at someone, what they are thinking?

To answer this question, you must conduct independent research on how our culture informs our interpretation of facial expressions (find credible, reliable and relevant sources!), and explain in sociological terms how the sociological theory applies to the facts.
You are making a fact-based argument. Therefore, each paper must contain four ingredients:

A. Paper #3: Coupling
The paper that you create must be at least TWO complete pages in length (approx. 500 words), typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins, in 10 or 12 point font.
This paper will be based on the textbook for this class and independent research on the topic.

Paper #2: Transparency

Consider our author, Malcolm Gladwell, and his sociological theory that human behavior is coupled to a particular place and context. (Talking to Strangers, chapters 10-12). Our text also shares that our social groups provide us with our cultural norms for human behavior (Text, 122-144).
Consider the phenomenon of human behavior being tightly connected to place and context, and whether you have changed your behavior based solely on the place and context in which you were behaving.
In your opinion, is Gladwell correct? Do we change our behavior depending on the place and context in which we are behaving? Do our assumptions about human behavior create conflict, particularly when we forget that place/context influences human behavior?

To answer this question, you must conduct independent research on coupling (the interplay between human behavior and place/context). Find credible, reliable and relevant sources and explain in sociological terms how the sociological theory applies to the facts.
You are making a fact-based argument. Therefore, each paper must contain four ingredients:
1.A statement of the issue. You must frame the question in terms of why it is being asked, or what it makes you think about.

Paper # 4: Family Violence

Consider our text, chapter 10, and gender inequality. (Text, 410-411).
Consider our text, chapter 15, and intimate partner violence. (Text, 385-418).
Consider the context of intimate partner violence and the sociological theories of “patriarchal terrorism” and “common couple violence.”
In your opinion, is intimate partner violence casually linked to gender inequality? Better stated, is family violence a direct result of violating a gender norm?

To answer this question, you must conduct independent research on how cultural norms about family structure impact violence in the U.S. (find credible, reliable and relevant sources!), and explain in sociological terms how the sociological theory applies to the facts.
You are making a fact-based argument. Therefore, each paper must contain four ingredients:
1.A statement of the issue. You must frame the question in terms of why it is being asked, or what it makes you think about.
