SOCW6210 Week 9 Discussion Response to 2 students
Response to Mike,
According to Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman (2017), the worldview perspective concerns peopleâ€s perspective of the world around them and how they fit into that world” (pg. 131). According to Baker (2007), “transculturality is, defined as the ability “to relate comfortably and competently in many different cultural contexts, while appreciating both differences and commonality” (pg. 152). So, I think this goes both ways regarding the client and the worker. For example, if I am engaged in a one-on-one intake with a client, and they express that their religion plays an important role in their life, and if I fail to acknowledge this aspect in my intervention, the results can be damaging for our client-worker relationship (Furness, & Gilligan, 2010, pg. 2198-2199). Consequently, if the client fails to try the modalities I present, and through collaboration we agree upon, then we fail as a team (client directly; worker indirectly). I feel that even if my religion does not align with the clients, as a worker, I should seek to understand the values of my clientâ€s religion, and use parts of it as a back drop to therapy. I say back drop only because I would need to be careful to not use ever aspect of the clientâ€s religion as a basis for intervention. My client may not hold or believe in every aspect of the culture. Through dialogue, I would gain an understanding of what my clientâ€s issues are, and how to apply his or her religion to the therapy process. Another example that might affect a client and my interaction might be that they see my status as a social worker as being privilege, and they may think that I do not understand their situation because of that status.
In addition, explain one way your own spirituality or religious convictions might support your work with a client, and one barrier it might present.
In my adolescent years I was forced to go to church. I did not like waking up early in the morning to go to a place that I did not fully understand. Unfortunately, and I do mean unfortunately, I do not have the relationship I wish I had with God. I believe In God, I just do not think you have to go to church or have to have a religion to believe in God. This perception helps me because I, personally, remain neutral regardless of oneâ€s gender. I do not believe one religion is superior to the next. I feel this helps me to not stereotype or use a personal bias when deciding to, or not, utilize a personâ€s religion as a strength in the therapy. Where this might present a barrier is for those clients I am helping that have a strong conviction toward a particular religion; I could be seen as an atheist (far from it). According to Simpson & Rios (2016), discrimination against atheists is pervasive in a nation (United States) that is around 77 percent Christian (pg. 320).
Finally, share one strategy for applying an awareness of spirituality to social work practice in general.
According to Baker (2007), “social workers should participate in a self-awareness process through which they develop self-understanding about their personal biases and experiences related to spirituality and religion” (pg. 155). One strategy that comes to mind is to be mindful or practice mindfulness. Mindfulness requires an understanding of oneâ€s present state and emotions without evoking judgment. According to Birnbaum, & Birnbaum (2008):
The increasing use of mindfulness in the context of therapy represents the active initiative of clinicians seeking to enhance their own and their clients†relationship to the transpersonal to promote healing. Such therapists clearly adhere to a holistic and transcendental world view and freely adapt its implications to widen their repertoire of interventions within the field of social work (pg. 92).

Response to Alecia,
As individuals we use different holistic therapies for many reasons, for example, exercising, relaxing, and healing alternatives to the traditional use of medicines. Even as a social worker we learn that self-care is critical and crucial in dealing with the stresses, and challenges that come with providing clinical social work services. It is important as a social worker that we stay abreast of the popular ways of self-care for longevity and to be able to give the best service we can to our clients. All of this is important because when you deal with clients and their views are different from your views it can have an impact on you because you must forsake your belief for that moment and allow room for theirs. It would affect me if I had a client that denounced God.
I would have to check my feelings because they are entitled to their beliefs just as I am. I cannot impose what I believe on anyone and that is first and foremost what I must remember. One example would be if the client blasphemes the name of God spiritually I couldnâ€t take this. If it doesnâ€t directly relate to the professional relationship I would redirect that conversation to a more appropriate one or at least, try to. The barrier of this is I may need to seek assistance from a colleague or my supervisor in this situation because I know ethically what I believe and feel doesn’t matter in this situation. Another example would be if I had a client that just keep having abortions and never take preventive measure even when offered education.
It is my religious belief to not have an abortion. It is the clients right and this would be an internal barrier for me because it would take a toll on me thinking about the unborn. One strategy for applying awareness of spirituality is to see spirituality as a more superficial issue of information about client experience. When a client expresses about their relationship with God or has curiosities about life after death following the loss of a parent or husband, we are confronted with questions about how we understand and respond to that issue. This level of spiritual work doesn’t require us to have a spiritual standpoint for them on an individual level (Crisp, 2011). It requires that we view spirituality as an important factor of the client experience in the same way that we would see a clientâ€s gender, race, or culture. Through understanding, that is when we can use language, employ different strategies and adjust our approach to the way that spirituality is presented and for me, this is important (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016 ). This encourages us to ask the client questions about how spirituality matter to them and not us and how it is a source of their success to help them get to the next level of the healing process.
