PROMPT #1
For this module, I’d like for you to discuss the notion of social capital in your own life online. In your post, consider the following questions (although you do not need to answer them separately; just use them as the basis for formulating your post):

-In what ways do you form online connections? Or do you avoid them altogether, or something in between? Use the definition of social capital to explain these choices. (You may of course also refer to other ideas or examples from this week’s materials, but social capital must be used correctly in your post to receive credit.) Note that there are several definitions of social capital, all similar but distinct. I expect you to use the definition put forth in this module’s lecture so that we can have a productive discussion.
-What do you find to be the advantages and disadvantages of how you construct your online networks? Are there any changes you would like to make based on evolving circumstances or your thoughts from this class?

PROMPT #4. Given our focus on privacy and data ownership this module, I’d like to discuss the following:
-As a social media user (as we all are, in this class, to varying degrees), are you more concerned with companies and government agencies having surveillance access to your online activities, the sale of your online activities by ISPs, or the possibility of your data being hacked? Explain your answer, using references to class materials.
-Are you on the side of PJ or Alex, in the Reply All podcast about Facebook surveillance? Explain your answer.
-What measures do you take, if any, to protect your privacy and access to your various accounts?
-What do you think should happen to your stored social media data after your death, and why?

PROMPT #5
As we try to navigate the crowded information environment via social media, we need to develop skills at distinguishing among different categories of news and information, from reliable to unreliable, from legitimate with a point of view to propaganda to outright manufactured falsehoods.
Using this module’s reading materials, including (but not limited to) “the chart” and the “taxonomy of skewed news,” locate an online news item (article or video) that fits into one of the taxonomy categories described, or which you judge to be accurate and factual news reporting. YOU MUST SELECT AN ITEM THAT IS PRESENTED AS NEWS or analysis, NOT OPINION(such as an editorial, column, personal narrative, humor, or commentary). Use of what is clearly an opinion piece for this discussion will result in a zero.
Share the link here, and explain which category you believe it falls into, and why. Be specific, including mentions of the news source, other features of the reporting or presentation, sources quoted or relied on, as well as specific statements in the article that support your assessment. Remember: news stories present different points of view in an attempt to be fair or objective. Be aware of how quotes are used, for example. Use critical analysis to explain why you think they are biased or unfair, if you think they are. Also note that just because news is presented with an ideological perspective, that does not make it “fake” or inaccurate reporting. Look to the facts presented.
Make sure to base your evaluation solely on the elements of the article, not whether you agree with the topic or the author’s conclusions. Also note that stories about “fake news” do not in and of themselves necessarily constitute fake news.
Also remember that not all forms of bias are nefarious, and not all contextual information (for example, noting if a person is contradicting previous statements) is evidence of bias. Be thoughtful in your assessments.
