Assessment 2 – OHS Business Case: For the purposes of this assessment, you are to assume the role of a health and safety manager in a medium-sized business and prepare a business case for an OHSE improvement strategy. You may choose to use the scenario below, or you can choose to work on an OHSE business case relevant to your (deidentified) workplace. If you do choose to work on a case relevant to your own workplace, please submit your topic to your lecturer for approval prior to commencing work on it. Setting: Wholesale grocery distribution center employing 50 staff in the warehouse. Case: Proposal to purchase and install pallet levelers.Task: Prepare a business case to go to the senior executive team. You can use the templates in the learning materials for that week or another business case template of your choosing. However, it is important to focus on the numerical aspects of the cost/benefit analysis, as you need to establish the empirical basis for your case. Identify the type and source of empirical data you used to formulate your case.• Ensure you record financial and non- financial costs or benefits that may result from the proposal.• Include financial position on an annualized basis with a clear indication of the break-even time.• Devise performance measures you propose to monitor the initiative.• Ensure you discuss how the processes in OHSE auditing and other organizational systems might be utilized to maximize OHSE performance. Purpose: To assess the student’s ability to understand the key elements of a cost /benefit analysis and apply them to a business case. The process relies on the selection of the most appropriate performance indicators and audit methodology to evaluate outcomes, and Page 11 of 20 Version: cogent and persuasive writing skills in the carriage of your position. Task: Prepare a business case to go to the senior executive team. You will be provided with information and templates regarding business cases in the learning materials. You can use any data you choose, where relevant. Include all the data you need for you to formulate your case. Ensure you record financial and non- financial costs or benefits that may result from the proposal.Include financial position on an annualized basis with a clear indication of the break-even time.Devise, and critique the performance measure you propose to use to monitor the initiative. Ensure you discuss how the processes in OHSE auditing and other organizational systems might be utilized to maximize OHSE performance. This will most likely be done using a template format of your choice although you are free to use the IOSH template I have used in Session 3 of the Lecture. However, there are numerous templates and apps available for Business Cases; I don’t mind if you use these but you need to demonstrate you can apply them in the context of this scenario. You do not need to elaborate on the preamble regarding company structures, the situation leading up to the business case, etc as this will put you over the word limit. You can make up the unit costs for any improvements you suggest as long as they are not absurd. In other words, I am not expecting you to research the cost of various pallet lifters, etc. You may choose to look up the various jurisdictional worker’s compensation costs for your business case, one way of doing this is to access the Comparative Performance Monitoring reports put out by Safe Work Australia. In relation to the third part of the question, to get superior marks you will need to define your monitoring and evaluation criteria for the intervention proposed. Some business cases divide this between advantages for the employer and worker. The final element you may wish to consider is a risk assessment of your proposed intervention.
