Although this week the topic of discussion is Police Corruption and Responses, I want to switch our thoughts to the flip side, Police benevolence. It is so easy to look around us and pick out the negative thing’s society sees in local and national law enforcement. The following passage is in your textbook under the title, “In the news,” on page 220: In the News: To Protect and Serve Sarah Green was driving home at 2:45 a.m. in 2016 near Tampa (FL) when she saw the headlights of a car heading straight toward her on the expressway. She said she flashed her lights on and off, trying to warn the wrong way driver and pulled over to the right as far as she could, but the headlights kept coming. Then Deputy John Robert Kotfila Jr. passed her and placed his car between her and the oncoming vehicle, deciding in a spilt second to act as a shield to protect her. The collision was devastating. The 30-year-old deputy was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he died from his injuries. Deputy Kotfila’s paternal and maternal grandfathers, father, uncle, and brother were also law enforcement officers. Green said, “I was a random person on a random road at a random time. He saved me.” Now stop for a moment and think about this story, how often do you think something like this happens? How often do law enforcement officers place their lives in jeopardy to protect those they do not even know? I am not saying that in these situations the officer has to die or even get injured but the fact that they do this to protect those they do not even know and little to no mention at all occurs. Now for the true assignment: for this discussion find an article, video or case where the officer is credited with something positive and then explain in your own words how this action benefits the community. Remember to support your argument with facts not just opinion. As with anything you do in academics, please list the source you use to support your argument at the end of your post. Remember this is not just merely opinion, it is a discussion based on articulable facts so do your homework (List the source in APA format).
