ENGL 1102 Essay 2Description
ENGL 1102: Poetry Essay Questions and Instructions: Instructions: Answer one of the following questions in MLA-formatted, essay of 400-750 words in length. Your essay must follow the standard academic form: introduction with a “hook” and a specific thesis statement ending the introductory paragraph, body paragraphs that support the thesis, and a conclusion that offers final thoughts. Focus on clearly and directly answering the question in your thesis sentence, including the thesis points. Remember to answer each part of the question in your thesis and support it in the body. Support should be clear and organized; supporting points should not overlap. Do not summarize the poems; instead, analyze them. The response should be well-structured and free of grammatical errors. Your title cannot be the same as the title of the story. You must use direct evidence/support from the poem(s), which is your primary source, to back up your support/analysis. The use of textual evidence is to add depth to *your*thoughts; it should not dominate the essay. The textual citations should be no more than 15% of your paper. A good rule of thumb is to utilize the textual evidence once in each paragraph. You must cite the play using MLA styling. The essay should include a Work(s) Cited page. In-text parenthetical citations must be properly used in the body of the essay. For this assignment, you do *not* need external research (or secondary sources). Review the course syllabus for plagiarism reminders and policies. The CGTC Degree-Level Rubric is used to assess this essay. Wikipedia/Cliff Notes/Pink Monkey/Spark Notes/Shmoo/Similar Sites or any other .com or .net sites are not to be used in formal, academic work, such as this essay. You will not receive full credit for your essay if you rely on those types of materials. If you need to use an external source, use one that you can access through Galileo on the library’s website; it must be cited accordingly. Question Options: 1) Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 18”: Analyze the comparisons/contrasts in “Sonnet 18.” What does the speaker desire in the end? Could we say he achieved what he desired for? 2) Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 73”: Analyze the controlling metaphors in each of the quatrains. How are they related, or what is common between them? 3) John Donne’s “Death, be not proud”: Explain each step in the argument that “proves” Death not to be very powerful. 4) Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est”: Contrast three images of the soldiers in this poem with the images that typically appear in recruiting posters or commercials. Use point by point method of organization for your essay. (Specify and cite the poster or commercial that you use.) 5) Theodore Roethke’s “My Papa’s Waltz”: What is the tone (or tones) of Roethke’s “My Papa’s Waltz”? Explain how it reflects the attitude of the speaker? 6) Langston Hughes’s “Theme for English B”: Racial difference between the speaker and the others in the class is an important part of this poem? Explain your argument, using distinct examples.
