Plato was one of the world’s most famous thinkers and is renowned for his work in philosophy. He was a student of Socrates and a teacher to Aristotle, two other famous philosophers. His writing explored philosophy, justice, and cosmology. The “Allegory of the Cave” explores topics about reality, higher consciousness, disillusionment, and more. General Summary: In the story, prisoners have lived chained to a wall in a dark cave their entire lives. They only see shadows projected on a wall, and they believe these shadows are real. In fact, these shadows have shaped their entire reality. These shadows are all they know! And these shadows are controlled by others inside the cave. However, one day a prisoner leaves the cave and walks outside into nature. He is exposed to sunshine and light for the first time, and now he can truly “see” forms, shapes, and reality. The shadows that he thought were real, were simply shadows–a skewed perception if you will. Questions from the Reading: In the story, the character Socrates asks, what would he think of his companions back in the cave? Would he pity them because of their limited views of reality? Would he return and try to bring them to the “light”? If he returned to them and exposed the truth, would they laugh at him and call him mad? Would they possibly even kill him to prevent being shown a greater truth? Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” explores the tension between the imagined reality that we think is “real” (shadows) versus the reality that is the “truth” (outside the cave). Questions to consider about this text: Would you be willing to step outside of the “cave” for a greater truth? What would you risk leaving behind? Would you return to save the others or continue forward on your own? And can you truly escape the “cave”? Plato believes we can! He encourages readers to question every assumption we have–to think for ourselves and uncover our own unique path. We will face criticism when we leave the “cave” but it’s important to stay out of it for deeper knowledge and ultimate enlightenment. This is a rich, insightful text. I particularly like the idea of what’s get left behind when we reach for enlightenment. If we return to reveal the truth to the others, will we compromise our own growth, or is it our moral obligation to return and help the others see the truth?
