PICTUREBOOK FAIRY TALE PROJECT

 

The Assignment:Chooseone fairy tale from online(a classic version of atale), and then locate at least three picture book adaptations of the story. For example, if you chose "Little Red Riding Hood," you would need to find three picture book versions at the library or in your own collection after you identified the classic version.You can also use e-book versions but make sure you have a device on which you can sufficiently explore the illustrations.Most of the classic, older versions of the fairy tales can be found online or in anthologies. The most common classic versionsare by Grimm and Perrault.Beaumont may be another.You will find links to many of these versions in our Fairy Tale Modules.If there is a classic fairy taleyou want to use and you are not certain it is the classic version, please send me a message.

 

You will have a total of four fairy tales for your paper:

1.The Classic/Traditional Version[Links to traditional versions are designated in the respective modules]

2.Picturebook version #1

3.Picturebook version #2

4.Picturebook version #3

Goals: •Read and closely exploreeach adaptation/revision of the tale•Investigatesimilarities and differences between each revision and the original tale

•Explore both visual and textual aspects of each revision—look closely at the words AND the pictures.

•Discusshow real child readers might find meaning in the picture book versions. These may just be your assumptions, unless you want to share the picturebooks with children and share some of the responses you collect.

I especially would like you to discuss changes made in these more recent picture book versions, and whether these changes work or don’t work. Avoid using Disney versions of the fairy tales—try to find re-worked versions that you are not familiar with.If you look at international versions of a tale, consider how cultural and national differences affect the significance of the tales.
