Lab 18 – Digital Logic:PurposeStudents will construct and studythe invertor or not gate.TheoryThe core element of digital logic isthe transistor, a switch controlled notby the push of a finger, but by voltage.An regular switch needs two terminalsfor current to enter and then exit again.Transistors need a third terminal, thebase, that turns current flow on whenthe base voltage reaches a critical level.The 2N2222A in the kit looks like a tinyhalf-cylinder with three wire leads onthe bottom. Looking at the flat face ofit, the leads are, left-to-right, emitter,base, and collector (outlet, pushbutton,and inlet). Get out the protoboard from the kit.
Find a 470 Ω resistor from the kit(yellow, purple, black, black) and put itin column d from row 1 to row 4.
Find the 2222 transistor in the kitand spread the leads slightly so that itspins go in rows 4, 5, and 6 in column cwith the flat face to the right. Currentwill flow in at pin 4 and out at 6 whenthe base is on. Again, flat face right!
Put a 20 Ω (red, black, black, gold)in column d from row 6 to row 9.
Get one of the LEDs from the kit. Ithas a clear cylindrical head and twolong wires, one of which is either greenor red. This needs to go from row 4 to9 in column e. Its orientation matters.The company that made these chosethe black wire as the positive, for someodd reason. The black wire goes in row4 (the bare wire tip, of course).
Get out a 9-volt battery from the kitand the clip-on connector for the top ofit. Red is positive for this and goes inrow 1 of column b. The black plugs intorow 9. The LED should now be lit.
It’s time to apply a signal (voltage)to the transistor’s base to turn thisswitch on (and the LED off). Get onemore 470 Ω and plug it in from row 1to row 5 in column a to supply voltageto the base. Feel free to unplug andreinsert it a few times to see thatturning the base on shuts the LED off.Just don’t run this circuit too long! Thissetup is taxing for that 20 Ω resistor.AnalysisAnswer in Canvas:
