CMP 2201 – PERSUASIVE PROPOSAL ASSIGNMENT

Bettering the Community and/or the Environment

PURPOSE: Your objective is to persuade your classmates to either 1) give financial or participatory support to an existing local organization or agency that betters the community (ex – Crazy Lady Rescue, Portneuf Valley Farmers Market, Pocatello Pride), or 2) support a local organization or agency – or act in some way – that supports or improves the environment (ex – Portneuf River Vision Study, City of Pocatello compost program, Adopt-a-Highway). The best proposals will be those directed at support for a specific project or event (coat drive, car wash, bake sale, fundraiser 5k run, etc.) or those that encourage a specific and realistic action/change of behavior (plant bee-friendly flowers, purchase and carry with you a reusable shopping bag, carry a trash bag with you when you hike and pick up trash every time you go, etc.). Topics to avoid: the Idaho Food Bank and Benny’s Pantry (both are unoriginal and overdone), a general request to recycle (it is very vague AND most already likely do “this” in some way).

PREPARATION: Before you write your speech, you’ll prepare and administer an audience survey/questionnaire to determine who your specific audience is. You’ll want to come up with 7-10 questions that will help you answer the following questions: What does my audience know about the problem I am trying to solve? Do they care about the problem I am trying to solve? Does the problem affect them (or anyone they care about) in any way? What would/wouldn’t they be willing to do to solve the problem? What objections, if any, would they have to acting to solve the problem the way I want them to? Are they already actively doing what I want them to do? (If they are already doing what you want them to do, there is no point in speaking about your topic.) All questionnaires need to be posted on the Audience Survey/Questionnaire Forum on Moodle (see Moodle for specific due date and link).

You will use the information you get from your questionnaires to help you determine which type of audience you will be speaking to (favorable, apathetic, neutral, active, hostile, or mixed). You will then use the guidelines in the text, to help you determine how to structure and delivery your speech. Throughout your preparation, employ the Strategies for Adapting to Specific Audiences outlined in Table 6.1 of your text.

STRUCTURE: Choose and employ the strategic persuasive structure (N-A-R, Monroe’s Motivated Sequence, Balance, Problem-Solution) that you believe would be the most effective given your audience and your topic. Compose and upload to Moodle a full-sentence, preparation (formal) outline following the format of your chosen structure and adhering to the Principles of Outlining you learned in COMM 1101.

Note: If you choose Monroe’s Motivated Sequence, you must use it the way it is taught in this class, NOT the way it is taught in COMM 1101. While it is similar, there are differences you’ll need to recognize.

Employ clear reasoning throughout and help the audience follow it by employing the appropriate structure and by creating effective transitions. Use strong evidence to support your claims – examples, statistics, testimony from experts – that will be seen as credible by your audience.

Use strong emotional appeals chosen with this audience’s motivations clearly in mind (examples: desire for money, compassion for others, patriotism, love of animals).

TIME LIMITS: Your speech is to be 6-8 minutes in length. Effective time management will be considered in the grade. Presentations that are under time show a lack of idea development, which is worse than presentations that are overtime (which show a lack of selecting/editing of information).

DELIVERY: Your delivery must be extemporaneous, which means you can’t read your outline to us and you don’t want to fully memorize your speech. You are strongly encouraged, of course, to use note cards. You MUST NOT READ to us. You also MAY NOT set up some sort of homemade teleprompter. Plan carefully and practice thoroughly.

COVER PAGE: At the beginning of your outline, you must provide a Cover Page that includes the following:

1. Your name.

2. Your properly worded specific purpose.

3. The specific classification of your audience.

4. The strategic persuasive structure you chose and a rationale for WHY you chose that structure and not one of the others.

5. At least 3 motives/emotions you appeal to in your speech in order to get us to act.

6. A works cited page consisting of at least 3 highly credible sources you used to prepare your speech. Please use the 7th edition of MLA for your citations.

Note: All proposals are expected to offer well-supported specifics and evidence regarding the existence of the community need. Remember that the “need” or “problem” is not the organization’s lack of funds or volunteers. The need is the “reason” the organization or action you wish us to take exists/is necessary (e.g., adolescent substance abuse, homelessness, high number of stray/homeless animals, pollution). Your proposal must argue that the organization effectively responds to this need/problem and, therefore, is deserving of our participatory or monetary support. Finally, the specific event you want us to support or the specific action you want us to take should not be presented as the solution to the problem, rather it should be presented as the action you ultimately wish us to take (so, it will be developed in the Call to Action in the Conclusion).
