Patient Teaching Project (10% of Course Mark)
Objectives
- Apply the principles of health teaching to create, administer and evaluate a medication health teaching plan
- Recognize and write important teaching points to a patient who is prescribed a common medication
- Utilize high-level teamwork and creativity in completing the assignment
Overview
Learners will work in pairs or in teams of three* to create a pamphlet or a patient teaching video. The purpose of this assignment is to teach patients about a commonly prescribed medication and create a tool that presents the information in lay terms.
Learners will be assigned one medication from the list below:
- furosemide
- atorvastatin
- metformin
- warfarin
- metoprolol
- amlodipine
- pantoprazole
- citalopram
- Percocet
- diltiazem
- alendronate
- Aricept
- digoxin
- gabapentin
- nitroglycerin transdermal patch
- salbutamol* (+ aerochamber)
- Advair diskus* (+ how to administer)
- nitroglycerin SL spray* (+ how to administer)
- Innohep* (+ how to inject)
- Humalog* (insulin pen + autoshield)
- Humulin R* (insulin pen + autoshield)
- Lantus* (insulin pen + autoshield)
- Combivent* (nebules + using a nebulizer)
Teams of three can choose from meds with asterisk above, and they are expected to discuss how to administer the medication as one of their pharmacologic teaching.
To ensure that there is no duplication in assigned medication among learners in a section, learners are responsible for seeking approval from their course facilitator regarding their chosen medication before they start working on the assignment. Learners may choose a common medication not listed above with prior approval from the course facilitator.
Marking Criteria
Marking is based on the learners’ discussion of the chosen medication, and ability to translate medical terms into lay terms. The following elements must be included:
- Indication for the medication, including a brief pathophysiology of the related disease condition
- Common adverse and side effects, including what to do when adverse effects are experienced, and how to manage side effects
- At least three relevant medication-related patient teaching and at least three non-pharmacologic (lifestyle approaches) that complement medication therapy. An example of non-pharmacologic strategy is low-fat diet for a patient who is prescribed a nitroglycerin patch.
- Relevant pictures/illustrations to enhance medication understanding of patients who are visual learners.
Lay terms
Medical terminology can be overwhelming for any patient. Translating information into lay terms (Grade 6 education) means translating medical terminology into plain, standard English. For example, a nurse explaining that a medication can cause hypotension may not be as effective as saying that a medication can cause blood pressure to decrease.
Assignment Formats
Learner full names and section must be clearly identified on the “cover” of the project. Please review syllabus related to late assignment policy. Learners must complete this assignment to pass the course.
Pamphlet
The pamphlet is one 8×11 sheet of paper (double sided). References need to be included in APA format at the “end” of the pamphlet. A hard copy of the pamphlet is to be handed in to the course facilitator in class on the scheduled deadline. The course facilitator is not responsible for lost assignments submitted on Dropbox.
Video
Videos are no longer than 4 minutes in length. Learners will upload video to YouTube and email the link to the course facilitator on or before the deadline. References must appear in APA format at the end of the video. The course facilitator will inform the learners when marking is complete so that the video can be removed from YouTube if the learners wish.
Accepted Resources
Learners should use at least three academic resources such as the Pharmacology textbook, nursing drug guide, the database DYNA MED, or any recent (within the last five years) Canadian Clinical Practice Guideline. Other academic resources are acceptable as long as they are cited appropriately. The purpose of this is to have the student focus on reliable resources. Learners need not quote course material as they are translating drug information into lay terms; however, they will be expected to cite information sources.
Marking Rubric
Element | 0-1 | 1.5-2 | 2.5-3 | 3.5-4 | 4.5-5 |
Therapeutic use of the medications | Therapeutic use is missing or is incorrect | Learners connect the correct therapeutic use of the medication with a briefly discussion of pathophysiology of related disease process. Wording is concise and clear in lay terms.
Common adverse / side effects | No adverse /side effects are mentioned or the effects mentioned are incorrect | Learners clearly discuss at least three most important adverse effects and at least three most common side effects. Patient management (to promote safety and enhance comfort) of common adverse and side effects are presented in a brief and accurate manner in in lay terms.
Complementary health strategy | No complementary strategies are identified, or the strategies present are inappropriate or irrelevant to the medication | Learners include at least three appropriate pharmacologic (medication related) and three nonpharmacologic (healthy lifestyle) approaches and clearly explain each teaching in lay terms.
APA (7th ed.) format (headings and reference list), spelling and grammar, standard professional tone, reader-friendly layout, and overall presentation. | References are missing; Meaning is obscured by frequent grammatical or spelling errors | References are current (published within the last five years), reliable academic sources and in appropriate APA format; the assignment contains very few spelling or grammatical mistakes. The content is presented in a logical sequence with helpful visual aids. |
Total possible marks 20/20
