UNST224 — Environmental Sustainability Fall 2020 Neighborhood Sustainability Analysis and Park Ecosystem Services Summary In this independent fieldtrip, you will explore your neighborhood and a local park and evaluate them in terms of their sustainability and the ecosystem services offered. Complete the Neighborhood Sustainability Analysis (NSA) form and the Ecosystem Services Summary (ESS) below and turn them in one week after your fieldtrip. When scoring for the NSA, use values between 1-5. A one is poor; a five is excellent. Provide thoughtful observations to justify your scoring. You may enter observations in the table below or as a written summary below the table if you need to explain your thoughts in greater detail.
NSA methods
Your neighborhood will be defined as a circle with a 1 mi radius centered on your home. Explore your neighborhood and fill-out the assessment form below. If you have difficulty getting out to study your neighborhood, you may use a combination of Google Maps and Google Earth to conduct your assessment.
ESS methods
Visit the park closest to your home. Please provide its name and describe all the provisioning, regulating, and cultural ecosystem services you think it provides. Imagine the park at different times of year and under different conditions to make a complete list (e.g., in the rain, does it absorb rainwater? In the spring, does it provide pollinator resources?). Please present your results in a table, with a column for each category of service (provisioning, regulating, and cultural) and rows in which you list specific services. Below the table, describe how the services your park offers may be improved (e.g., planting more trees to absorb more CO2). An example table you could fill out is provided after the NSA worksheet.
Broadly, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment defines ecosystem services categories as described in Table 1. You can read more here (https://www.millenniumassessment.org/documents/document.769.aspx.pdf). Be specific in your analysis. Writing ‘food’ would not be an appropriate answer. If blackberries grow in your park, specify that. If you think your park may regulate the climate, describe how (are there trees in your park that sequester carbon?). More thoughtful answers will help you earn more points in this activity.

Use of a neighborhood for multiple purposes (residential, retail, etc.). Mixed use is a characteristic of sustainable neighborhoods. It can lead to a fully utilized urban environment, with efficient use of infrastructure. Mixed use also leads to increased pedestrian and bike activity and reduces urban sprawl. How would you rank your neighborhood? Is it entirely residential or are there commercial spaces, community spaces (schools, churches, community centers), and other types of amenities?
Proximity of amenities
Ease of access to amenities leads to less driving, more walking or biking, and improved health. Make special note of access to groceries and the existence of food deserts. How easy is it to get what you need in your neighborhood?
Single‐family affordable housing
The availability of affordable housing leads to job creation and stimulates the local economy. Does your neighborhood offer affordable housing options (these may be government subsidized housing or typical apartments)?
Proximity to public transportation
Ease of access to public transportation limits driving. Are there bus stops or MAX stops in your neighborhood?
Bike friendly
Safe bike routes limit driving. How bikeable is your neighborhood?
Efficient water use
Are there stormwater drains in place to limit run-off into waterways? Are there signs of inefficient watering of greenspaces?
Job:housing ratio
When there are jobs available in a neighborhood, there are reductions in commuter traffic, air pollution, and an improved quality of life. Are there opportunities for residents to have jobs within your neighborhood?
Imperviousness
Concrete surfaces are impervious to water filtration and increase storm water runoff, leading to water pollution and a lack of groundwater recharge. Is your area dominated by concrete or is there exposed soil or vegetation along roads?
Street connectivity
Efficient road connectivity leads to less burning of gas and often to more walking. How well connected are the streets in your neighborhood (e.g., are there lots of dead ends that require circuitous driving routes)?
Trees
A neighborhood with abundant trees is good for mental health, lowers cooling bills, and reduces the heat island effect. Are there many trees in your neighborhood?
Greenspaces
Parks provide important ecosystem services. Does your park have one or more parks?
