Needs Assessment and Activity Evaluation
A needs assessment is done by school counselors prior to implementing developmentally based programs and activities. By performing a needs assessment, you are best able to ascertain the specific needs of the specific kids with whom you are working as well as the school community in which you work. Although it may seem like some generic activities would work with any student at a given developmental level, keep in mind that even within Chicago the needs of students attending school in the south side, might be different then students attending school in the west side as well as the north side.
The purpose of a needs assessment is to determine or fine tune what the needs are of students with whom you work, so that you can design a means, through activities like classroom guidance, small groups, individual planning, and so forth, to address those needs.
An activity evaluation is conducted after implementing developmentally based programs and activities to measure how well the activity met the needs it was designed to address. That is, once the delivery system has been utilized, you will want to evaluate how well something did what it was supposed to do, as well as find ways to improve what was done. The current climate of professional school counseling and accountability is to frame your evaluation in terms of how the activity led to or is related to increased academic success and success in life for the kids involved.
The needs assessment and activity evaluations are two separate assignments. The first is designed to be conducted prior to implementing a developmental activity/intervention. The second needsassessment would be designed to assess how well the developmental activity/intervention worked. Both involve school counselors collecting data and using that data to strengthen the school counseling program, the students it serves, and to let others know how integral and indispensable school counseling programs are in the academic and life success of students.
This assignment does not required you to actually conduct a developmental activity/intervention with the population you chose. You will however need to provide a needs assessment that will work in conjunction with the activity/intervention.
For the needs assessment assignment, you will need to pick a school population and a developmental level. You will also need to set a goal as to what you are hoping to find out by conducting this needs assessment, the rationale behind this goal and how you are measuring the needs of this population. The instrument (existing or one that you will create) that you will use to assess the needs and a description of the participants (could be students, parents, teachers, administrators, local business leaders, support staff, or some other stakeholder sub-group) must be provided.
