Learning Objective
Distinguish between procurement logistics, production logistics, and distribution logistics.
Summary of the Article
Straka (2017) examined the history of the development logistics with particular emphasis on distribution logistics. The article noted that the term logistics originated during the Byzantine Empire around 900 and until the twentieth century was principally focused on military matters. In more recent times, logistics begin to be recognized as an economic theory that was concerned with the flow of materials from planning, management, implementation, and control. Straka defines logistics as “a summary of all activities for comprehensive management and implementation of material flow in the manufacturing processes and circulations of goods.” Logistics can be understood as a hierarchy where macro logistics is the overall network or chain, metalogistics is regional activities, micrologistics is at the firm level, and nanologistics the specific technological processes. Distribution logistics is seen as a part of micrologistics. It provides a range of solutions for distribution systems for companies, including warehouses and distribution centers, storing materials, optimizing distribution systems, and optimizing information, including expert systems to facilitate distribution activities. Distribution logistics includes all fiscal, organizational, and informational links between the output of the manufacturer and the consumer either through a store or a delivery point (Straka, 2017).
Analysis
The article generally supports the text. Gleissner and Femerling (2012) provide greater detail on the development logistics and during the twentieth century. The text discusses logistics around service elements of information services, core services, and additional services. The article defines the term nanologistics, which is not included in the book; however, the text discusses information systems. The book provides a clear delineation of the range of functions within logistics and breaks these functions into the categories of procurement, production, distribution, and disposal logistics.
Relation to personal experience or observation
At Central Texas College, anytime a program is proposed, and before the content is developed, it is necessary to gain the approval of the Curriculum Committee. I had been asked by the administration to create a proposal for a logistics program. Although I had worked as a warehouse manager and owned a retail store as well as having extensive systems implementation experience in the field, I did not have a strong academic, theoretical background in supply chain management. When I appeared before the committee to present the program, one of the first questions I was asked: “What is the difference between logistics and supply chain management.” My answer was apparently adequate becaxt material in this article on defining logistics and supply chain management, I would probably have sounded smarter, answering the committee. I find it is easy to explain what I do from day to day, but a lot harder to explain how it fits into the big picture.
The realization that I did not have the academic background has led me to pursue a Doctor of Business Administration in supply chain management. I am almost finished with the academic coursework and plan on starting my dissertation in January 2021.
