Literary Analysis Essay

This week you will have the opportunity to practice the skills of finding peer-reviewed sources and integrating material from these secondary (outside) sources into your writing.

First, go to the SUO library and locate at least one credible, scholarly source about Antigone. Ideally, it will help support the argument that you developed in your essay for Week 2.

Next, retrieve the essay you submitted to the Week 2 Essay Draft Discussion Board, along with the feedback about it that you received from your instructor. Open a new Microsoft Word document and copy and paste only the introduction of the Week 2 essay onto it. Decide whether to revise the introduction based on feedback from your instructor and/or additional ideas that you might have had since you first wrote it. Go ahead and make any revisions you consider necessary.

After that, or if you do not wish to revise the introduction, copy and paste the next paragraph to your new document, review it and revise as necessary, substantiating and reinforcing (when necessary and appropriate) your argument with quotes, paraphrases, or summaries from the peer-reviewed source that you retrieved from the library. Remember that quoted material should not exceed 25% of the essay. Repeat this process with all the essay’s paragraphs up through the conclusion. After incorporating scholarly material into your paper, it should be between 1,000 to 1,200 words long.

Once you have copied, pasted, and revised all the essay’s paragraphs, go over the paper to determine if it is properly formatted in APA style (from start to finish) and includes in-text and reference list citations, also formatted in APA style. Next, use the spell-check tool in Microsoft Word to identify misspellings. Finally, read through the essay one last time, looking for typos and glitches that spell check might have missed.

Name your document SU_ENG2002_W3_A2_LastName_FirstInitial.doc.

Submit the final draft of your essay in a Microsoft Word document to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.

Gender and Gender Conflict in “Antigone”

“Antigone” is a play by Sophocles produced around 441 BC. The play provides a lot of instances that portray the oppression of women. The two characters who play a crucial role in portraying the gender issues are Antigone and Ismene. Ismene follows the societal responsibilities placed on women in Thebes. On the other hand, Antigone is a revolutionary who is against oppression by the government. Gender and gender conflict is a dominant theme throughout “Antigone.”

The gender issues in the play are reflected in the characters of Antigone and Ismene. Ismene, Antigone’s sister, is a more conventional woman, while Antigone is more masculine and involved in societal politics. Ismene’s role as a conventional woman is evident in her behavior of being socially unconscious and her devotion to family. Antigone’s role as a masculine woman is portrayed in her treasonous activities she conducted throughout her life. In one instance, the two women trade gender roles where Antigone acts to save her family while Ismene defends judicial law over natural law when she refutes to assist Antigone conduct the burial of Polynices. In addition, Antigone’s death reflects the punishment women get for partaking in different gender roles.

In conclusion, “Antigone” reflects on the societal issue of gender roles. In the play, Antigone is a woman who is interested in conducting activities that are beyond the conventional roles a female play. On the other hand, her sister Ismene is committed towards the conventional gender roles; hence she is able to survive while Antigone dies due to her ‘heinous’ activities. The play is an accurate reflection of gender roles and gender conflict women went through in Ancient Greek.
