Journals:    This is the second set of journals (due November 20th) to complete your 10 total journals.
Each journal is a minimum of one page (12-font, typed and double-spaced) incorporating the weekly readings, current affairs and your informed thoughts about living life during a pandemic, civil unrest, and U.S. presidential election year, etc.   You may go over one page.
Please submit Journals #6 through #10 here before 11:59 p.m. November 20th.  (Please submit in one document together)
Your last five journals should include the following for each journal:
Example:  Journal #6 (Sociology1)
Name:
Date:  e.g.  October 12 (Week #9)

What are the societal problems of today?   How are the problems being made worse?  How are the problems being made better?  What solutions would you offer?
How are your family members (regardless of your ethnic background) being impacted by the current state of affairs?   What are the economic, cultural, ethnic, class, gender, family etc. resources they are utilizing to surviving, overcoming and thriving during this time?
How have government and laws helped us during this pandemic?  How have government and laws hurt us during this pandemic?
How are human beings working together with other groups to provide hope, strength and resources to their communities to make this time in their lives (the year 2020) manageable?
What makes you sad about this period (2020)?  What makes you happy?  What makes you grateful?  What gives you hope?  In terms of human beings, do you see any examples of people trying to help one another, care for one another and trying to best cope with 2020?

My Journal:
What are my thoughts as I submit my first journal for my first sociology class?  I have mixed emotions.  Some days I feel good.  Other days I feel exhausted.  And then, I also feel numb.    I will try to write freestyle and include some sources from the readings in this first journal.   I wanted to write about Colin Kaepernick.  He seems to trigger so much in this country.  There are those who find him to be like the most unpatriotic person that ever lived.  And there are those who think of him as a true patriot and a hero.
In class (Sociology 1, August 29, 2019), the professor talked about how it is important for us to connect our biography with history.   This is known in sociology as “the sociological imagination.”  It was coined by C.W. Mills in 1959.  https://www.thoughtco.com/sociological-imagination-3026756 (链接到外部网站。)
Those who demonize “Kap” see a spoiled athlete, a man of color, being defiant and spitting on the U.S. flag.  Those who see him as a patriot say he is silently, respectfully kneels as the U.S. national anthem is being played to protest against Black people getting murdered unnecessarily, usually by members of law enforcement.   The lives of those like Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant were cut short.  Their killings were senseless and committed by people who are supposed to “protect and serve.”  Technically, the guy who killed Trayvon Martin was a “wannabe police officer” who was a self-proclaimed neighbhorhood watch volunteer.   And, Sandra Bland was apprehended, taken into custody, and found dead in her cell.
I don’t understand why people are offended by Colin Kaepernick’s quiet protest.  He isn’t hurting anyone.   Why isn’t there outrage of the killings he is protesting, instead by these naysayers?   Kaepernick is mixed.  He was also raised by a white mom who adopted him when he was young.   Kaepernick wanted to find a way to shed light to all of these horrifying killings of Black people.   He wanted to find a respectful way to do so.  He consulted with a U.S. military veteran who said that servicemen pay tribute to their fallen soldiers by kneeling.    Kaepernick decided to do this while the national anthem played before his games.  I ask myself how this one simple act can mean two opposing views.  Professor Williams Leon said when two opposing viewpoints are put forth, they are called “dialectics.”  (Class lecture, August 29, 2019).
I am part-Afro-Cuban and part Mexican.   My Mexican background has a lot of Spanish, French and Italian ancestries so my Mexican side physically looks “white.”   My Cuban side is mostly of African ancestry so most of my family on the Cuban side look “Black.”  I look mixed –black and white.   People think I’m biracial, like Kap or sometimes call me, “light-skinned Black.”   Spanish is my first language.  I identify as Latino with Black and white backgrounds.    Even though I have only had positive encounters with police officers, I am still enraged by the killings of Black people.  It feels personal.   I know the statistics demonstrate a pattern.  Therefore, it isn’t just a stereotype or an overgeneralization.   A pattern can be demonstrated with empiricism as discussed in class.  Studies confirm that Black people are killed by law enforcement at a higher rate. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6080222/)   (链接到外部网站。)
I would consider “police brutality” against racial minorities a real social problem in the United States. The empirical data demonstrates this.   The sociological imagination is a good tool to help me decipher between my personal problems and social issues.   I don’t experience (or I haven’t experienced police brutality myself but I can also recognize that this is a real serious social problem in American society).
The last thing I wanted to mention as I express my outrage and sadness, almost every major civil disturbance (people like call these events “riots.”) was sparked by incidents of police brutality.  I studied the “Watts Riots,”  the  “1992 Rodney King/LA Riots”  “the Stonewall Riots” in the 1960s (LGBTQ Movement) , etc.  There is a correlation between police brutality and people “rising up.”   This social problem has been a constant in U.S. history.   As someone who looks part-Black and who may be identified as Black because of how race is seen in this society (one drop), these social problems, structural forces, and institutional practices (or institutional violations) affect my life deeply and profoundly.
I don’t think Kaepernick is a hero.   I don’t think his is unpatriotic.  I think he is like so many of us, a concerned citizen, fed up with the unequal treatment based on skin color and racial backgrounds.   He chose to quietly express himself with dignity and he paid the price.
