College is a time in a student’s life when they find out what type of profession will not just make money but will also be individually fulfilling. Classes often times emphasize the academic rigors of the real world with deadlines, assignments, and presentations. First- and second-year students are expected to find the balance between the academic and social freedom that college presents very quickly. Yet, it is the campus of one’s choice that builds the foundation of community that seeks to foster that professional drive. The social climate of diversity, inclusion, and acceptance plays a big role as to the events that take place on a campus. In the movie, “Higher Learning” by John Singleton, several events take place on the fictitious campus of Columbus University. With the backdrop of a Political Science 101 course taught by Maurice Phipps (Lawrence Fishbourne), students are taught a wide array of political narratives and experience the harsh realities that comes with attending college. Harassment, bullying, and sexual assault are only some of the issues that the incoming freshman class experience.

Writing Prompt:

Watch the movie “Higher Learning” by John Singleton. Pay close attention to the main characters in the film. Evaluate the characters of Malik, Kristen, and Remy. What type of emotional distress/turmoil do each of them find themselves in during their first year of college? How do their individual problems manifest themselves? In what ways does their approach to solving their problems both help and hurt them? Pick one additional supporting character (Fudge (Ice Cube), Monae (Regina King), Taryn (Jennifer Connelly) etc.) Explain what role they play in the film regarding the message of the overall movie? Finally, if you were presented with the decision that Malik has at the end of the movie to stay in school or leave after the tragedy, what would you do?
