
Questions to answer on global climate types.
Starting with Chicago, insert your graphs into a Word Document (or similar) and answer the following for each station. You should set up your assignment so that the questions are answered for each station directly under its graph before adding the next graph. (8 points for each station)
1.Calculate the annual average temperature. To do this, add the monthly temperatures and divide by 12 (the number of months).
2.Calculate the annual temperature range. This is simply the difference between the warmest month and coldest month.
3.Calculate the total annual precipitation. To do this, simply add the monthly amounts to get the total for the year.
4.Describe how temperature varies during the year. For example, is the temperature the same all year? Are there any months when the average temperature is below freezing?
5.Describe how precipitation varies during the year. For example, are the rainfall amounts similar all year long? Is there a definite wet season or dry season?
6.Use the map on p. 254-255 to identify the primary climate classification for each station, e.g. Tropical, Mesothermal, etc.
7.Use the map on p. 254-255 to identify the subcategory for each station. Choose between marine west coast, monsoon climate, humid continental, and Mediterranean climates. Do your descriptions in 4 and 5 make sense based on the map? You may want to refer to the detailed descriptions in the text.
find the approximate location of each station and identify its terrestrial biome. Refer to the text and briefly describe this biome in two or three sentences.

1. Define precipitable water in your own words. You may use your text or search the web. Cite any outside references!
2. You are looking at a map of how much moisture is available for precipitation in the lower half of the troposphere as an annual average. Where do you notice high and low amounts of precipitable water? Think about latitude zones.
3. In a couple of sentences, summarize the spatial pattern of precipitable water and explain why amounts vary in this way. You will need to read about temperature and humidity in Chapter 6 in the section on Humidity.
