HELPFUL INFORMATION TO WRITING YOUR RESEARCH PAPER:

In a formal academic paper, NEVER use: “I,” “we,” “our,” “us,” or “your” or “you.” It is to

be written entirely in the THIRD person: “he,” “she,” “they,” “theirs.”  Instead use: “the reader,” “the audience,” or “one”

Use transitions within your paper AND to move gracefully from one paragraph to another
ALL body paragraphs MUST contain at least one quote per paragraph to support your thesis
Do NOT copy from the sources. Plagiarized work will earn a zero.  Be sure to cite correctly
Write a THESIS STATEMENT and stick to it. Give THREE areas of interest (contentions).
An average paper deserves an “average” grade = C; to do better than average, check your

punctuation, spelling, grammar, and supports BEFORE I do.

Double space throughout (even between paragraphs; DO NOT add extra spacing)
Indent (tab only once) each new idea gets its own paragraph
This is a high school /college paper; therefore, elevate your word choice and your critical

thinking skills accordingly.

Remember that quotations support your position. They are NOT to be used to lengthen your

Paper (.  Your analysis and defense of your position are the critical aspects of this paper.

This is a research paper; it is also an informative OR persuasive essay. PERSUADE ME on your point-of-view!!!
AVOID late note cards. If Late, no editing will be completed.
The paper will be incomplete for not submitting Photocopies and Annotated content of all sources used (NO EXCEPTIONS).
All content used within the paper must be highlighted and annotated on the photocopy of the sources used and submitted with the note cards and final paper (NO EXCEPTIONS).
-10 points if your final Works Cited page and in text citations are not PERFECT.  This is one full letter grade!!!  (Be sure to look up correct MLA format for each type of source used within the paper)
When you submit the final paper, you MUST submit in a research folder in the order given.

If you do not, the paper will NOT be accepted, and it will NOT be graded.

Use MLA main heading (on cover page ONLY) and consecutive page numbers throughout the remaining paper in the running header.
Copies of articles or sources submitted can be from PRINT OR ONLINE (unless specific directions are given for a particular requirement stated on pre-checklist).

MUST submit your ENTIRE paper to Turnitin.com on the assigned due date and time or your paper will be considered LATE (paper is incomplete/LATE until it is submitted to Turnit.com)

INFORMATION YOU WANT TO INCLUDE WITHIN YOUR RESEARCH PAPER:

Introduction with a clearly stated thesis statement:

Opening remarks to interest the reader: hook
Provide background information about the topic
Content presented should answer the facts of: Who? What? Why? Where? When? How?
Preview the major points so the reader understands the ideas presented
Thesis/Overall Claim Statement: clear, direct statement of the main idea to be developed

Body Paragraphs based on researched facts:

Topic/Claim sentence(s): What point are you trying to make in each paragraph? (should

specifically align with the Roman Numeral on your outline)

Each idea/point (contention) presented in the thesis / overall claim statement should have concrete facts/evidence to back it up
At least two facts with specific details to support the point or idea: reasons with explanations
Details or examples should be plausible and memorable
Inform/Persuade me that your answers / facts are valid

One quotation in each paragraph to support facts / reasons stated
Transitions for paragraph fluency

Conclusion:

Restate or re-emphasize your thesis / overall claim statement
Recap what you have said / Summarize the main ideas

No new information stated or presented
