The main aim of Task 1 is to produce a succinct scholarly (work-in-progress) review in an area of research that is of interest to you. This is an independent research task. You will need a working topic by week 3. The expectation is that students will review and make evaluative comment on a minimum of 10 journal articles in their field of interest. It requires a title pertinent to the topic of the project), abstract and table of contents with sub-headings included Given the limited time-frame for the task, the emphasis is on developing a sustainable search strategy, arriving at a topic, selecting a manageable amount of literature, critical appraisal of its qualities and pertinence to your topic; presenting that literature to show synthesis of material and ideas, and development of the research problem & question(s) argued from that literature. Essentially the work of the review is to define and generate as well as position and defend the questions. Different types of research call for different styles of questions so if you want to use statements or hypotheses that is acceptable, but it is important that they are clearly articulated and linked back to the review. Please read the lecture notes about literature reviewing. For each task there will be a checklist. All such information is presented on blackboard online. Please go back up to table 1 and look at what is included Required – an Appendix LITERATURE GRIDAppend a grid (template provided) outlining the details of your search and five (only) journal articles you have used in the task. Give the appendix the title APPENDIX 1: LITERATURE GRID. This appendix is important given everyone will have a different topic. The markers gain from the grid some sense of the substance of the journal literature you are drawing on in your review. A summary template of this kind is essential to a well-managed record of literature. The marking criteria The criteria broadly cover• Search, identification, and selection of the literature• Demonstrated understanding of the literature and its evaluation• Coherence of argument (support for the research questions)• Clarity in organization, analysis and synthesis• Good level of mechanics of writing, citation and referencing• Good level of development in the research questions Given this is a complex task it will be assessed holistically, however all of the areas identified in the rubric are considered in the assessment. Please be assured that we realise that those of you doing research for the first time are unlikely to be outstanding in every area. We encourage you to aim for satisfactory or above in this first task as the satisfactory level usually best represents where you are in your first attempt at a review and so is a good benchmark. The diagnostic advice you receive back is based on the rubric The aim of Task 2 is for students to demonstrate their ability to conceive, plan and communicate the design of a research project drawing on an understanding of both literature and research approaches and methods. Please read the lecture notes about the research proposal. For each task there will be a checklist. All such information is presented on blackboard online. Please go back up to table 1 and look at what is included Make sure you use and reference methods literature to back up detail even if this is limited to the set textThe task requires all of the following:Title, abstract & table of contents (with sub-headings included);Aims and rationale (eg problem being addressed) for the study; An Abridged (eg one page) literature review (you can append the full review from task 1 but not required);Detail of the Approach &/or embryonic conceptual framework – enough to provide a sense of the traditions you are drawing on (consider adding a schematic if yours is a multi-staged or phased project)Specification of Research questions and,a statement or schematic of an overall PlanDetail [of Sample] of who or where the information is coming from (which subjects/participants, sites or sources)Detail of method of Data collection including some evidence of this either an interview schedule, survey instrument (questionnaire) or other data gathering protocol such as a template or a test or intervention. Some detail is required (even in rough draft) indicating some development of instruments (eg draft item types). Fuller detail can be appended. If you are using existing instruments offer evidence of their properties and use by others from the literature. If you are doing a philosophical/non-empirical project this will not apply and you will focus more on conceptual and theoretical framework. You can also place emphasis on source availability and location. If you are studying documents you will need to explain your management of these as dataConsideration of what is involved in Analysis. Try and imagine this with help where possible from the set text. Timetable or timeline (between 1 and 4 years) Consideration of Strengths and weaknesses of the design. Essentially this is about robustness, quality, validity and credibility, try and imagine aspects of the design that have potential flaws eg access issues, or response rates, low reliability scores and what you might have to attend to or do by means of further study or planning .Consideration of Research ethics and integrity. Every student is required to reflect on this in relation to research in general or their research in particular in the proposal. Also provide evidence of knowing about university ethics requirements for Human research by appending one draft participant information statement and consent form using the templates provided . A clear statement of Significance and potential contribution You will need to achieve a reasonable working level of coherence and consistency across the different elements (this will be helped by sub-headers , use of tables and figures) that reflects an understanding of the reader’s needs.Make Reference to pertinent methods literature ( and at the minimum refer to the set text) In addition to assisting you to strengthen the link between literature and questions (completed in task 1) this task will provide• Evidence of consideration of issues of rigour in research• Development and clarity of the research problem and questions and their link to data collection• Demonstrated understanding of the appropriate methods/techniques for data collection• Demonstrated capacity to further develop a suitable instrument (questionnaire or interview protocol)• Evidence of reflection on & attention to ethical issues/research integrity The marking rubric below will help you to envisage the level of quality to aim for. The marking will be holistic.Once again aim for satisfactory or higher. Satisfactory is a good level for a first attempt
