Simply put, a major purpose of science is the accumulation of scientific knowledge; and what people do with such knowledge is believed to be solve problems. One troublesome issue, which has been discussed in prior lectures was the sole of science, early on, with gaining ‘control’ over nature. Today, this might be interpreted as ‘control over a situation. Naturally, challenges to this purpose include questions regarding the status of the knowledge and its methodological reliability such as how was the data, and corresponding information, derived from the data, achieved and how reliable are they both. One test of reliability is replication; another is its value for prediction. Central to both concerns is ethics.
Typically, ethics entails ‘reflection’ on moral questions. Morality studies standards of conduct, especially behavioral actions and decisions, as these can be evaluated in terms of values – values denote the importance of some thing or some action, given the capability to determine what actions are best to do or what way is best to live (deontology). However, values can be used to describe the significance of different actions (axiology). Values can be defined as broad preferences concerning appropriate courses of action or outcomes. As such, values reflect a person’s sense of right and wrong or what “ought” to be.
Personal values exist in relation to cultural values. Personal values provide an internal reference for what is good, beneficial, important, useful, beautiful, desirable and constructive. Values generate behavior and influence the choices made by an individual. Values are generally received through cultural means, especially transmission from parents to children. Parents in different cultures have different values.
Values relate to the norms of a culture, but they are more global and abstract than norms. Norms provide rules for behavior in specific situations, while values identify what should be judged as good or evil. Cultures emphasize values which their members broadly share. Over time the public expression of personal values that groups of people find important in their day-to-day lives, lay the foundations of law, custom and tradition.
