Crim 101
Assignment 2 (20%)
PLEASE CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
The idea of there could be a genetic component to deviance and crime is one that many social scientists oppose, mainly due to the implications to crime prevention strategies (containment/neutralization vs. focus on social environment and resources). But, as our knowledge of the human genetic code grows, we may someday have to confront the question: if it can be shown, with high scientific confidence, that some people have inherited genes that put them at a high risk of becoming deviants and/or criminals, what do we as a society do about them? Taking both a utilitarian (greatest good for the greatest number) and a humanitarian (human rights) view to the issue, as well as Raine’s (2014) chapter on The Future, research and discuss the various options you think we could consider and then answer, how far do you think we should go in order to prevent crime and deviance within our society? What would you do with adolescents and/or adults whose genetics show a high likelihood of criminal behaviour? [Please note that this question is not asking for a summary, critique, or analysis of Raine’s thought experiment and approach, but rather your own thought experiment using Raine for inspiration and support. As such, you must provide your own unique thought experiment supported by research and Raine.]
Using the research and resources provided in the notes and discussed in class (to the extent you can – do not assume or make up alternative facts) as well as research you have undertaken, analyze your own biosocial jigsaw puzzle in terms of your predisposition towards antisocial behavior and violence. What sort of genetic and/or biological risk factors do you have, if any? What about the contribution of your social environment? In your (highly-informed) opinion, is the biosocial perspective able to explain your behaviour accurately? Why or why not?
Thinking about your own life and history, analyze which theory, strain or social control, best explains your personal relationship with deviance, whether positive or negative. In your analysis, make sure that you specifically apply the elements of the theory to your own life (i.e., modes of adaptation from strain theory or bonds to society from social control theory) and give concrete, real-life examples of this application. Finally, conclude with the answer to this question: why does the theory you chose better explain your relationship to deviance than the other theory you did not choose?
GRADING CRITERIA/RUBRIC
Credit will be given for:
Completeness and citing – i.e. you must provide a comprehensive analysis, based on both critical thought and research. All instructions given in the framework must be followed and all aspects of that framework included in your assignment. All research sources must be properly cited in the text and there must be a Bibliography/References/Works Cited at the end of the paper.
The quality and relevance of your analysis – i.e., the connections you make between your research and class materials, the choice of resources and research sources, and the conclusions that you come to based on these.
The structure of your paper – i.e. it must be organized in a clear and coherent manner, well-researched and critically-analyzed. This is an academic research/analysis paper, and must be organized as such, with an introduction, body and conclusion.
Writing – regardless of the brilliance of your thinking on the subject, if it is poorly expressed, you will not get a good mark. Poor writing and grammar have a negative impact on the clarity and quality of your paper, and will be penalized. Proof-read, spell-check, grammar-check, and double check.
SOURCES:
For this assignment, you are required to use external research sources beyond the lecture notes, which for this assignment, you MUST cite in the text and you must also provide a Bibliography/Works Cited.
EVERY CLAIM YOU MAKE IN A RESEARCH PAPER MUST BE SUPPORTED BY RESEARCH AND/OR EVIDENCE. IF YOU CANNOT SUPPORT IT, IT DOES NOT BELONG IN YOUR PAPER. This includes opinions – they must be informed by research and evidence otherwise they do not belong.
All sources must be properly referenced IN THE TEXT and in the Bibliography/References/Works Cited. What this means is that any information you take from a journal article or other resource (that is not considered “common knowledge” and is not your own idea or opinion) must be referenced in the text. This does not only apply to direct quotes (which you must use properly). Even when you take the information and put it in your own words (paraphrasing), you still must reference the author(s)/source of information in the text. Paraphrasing something taken from a research source does not make it your idea.
You must use credible, (preferably peer-reviewed) academic sources. You may not take information from online sources (such as Wikipedia or government websites) or any sources and present it as the majority of your paper (either quotes or paraphrased). You must use your sources to SUPPORT your argument/claims, not as the actual argument or claim. Papers that are made up essentially of paragraphs or quotes cut and pasted from sources will be graded with an F. Please note that Wikipedia is NOT an academic source and should not be used as such.
Improper referencing = PLAGIARISM. Plagiarism is a breach of academic integrity and is a very serious offence in the academic world, as it is essentially taking credit for someone else’s ideas. The penalties for plagiarism become more severe as you progress through school. IF YOU TURN IN A PAPER WITH NO CITATIONS IN THE TEXT AND/OR NO BIBLIOGRAPHY, YOU WILL RECEIVE AN AUTOMATIC F because it means the paper was plagiarized. No exceptions.
There are many methods of in-text citation – MLA, APA, ASA, etc. Which one you choose is up to you but make sure you learn how to properly reference all of your sources. You can find instructions on different citation formats and how to use them on the Capilano Library website at https://libguides.capilanou.ca/citeit.
Note that all in-text references must include page numbers where they are available. Even if the citation method you choose states that page numbers are not required, for the purposes of this assignment, you must include page numbers in all in-text citations. For journal articles online, sometimes the page numbers are not immediately accessible; you may have to go into the full reference to find the page numbers and number the pages yourself. For online sources, follow the instructions for the citation method you are using. Citation guides are available at https://libguides.capilanou.ca/citeit.
You must include a Bibliography/References/Works Cited as the final page of your paper. It is important that you learn how to properly reference your sources and online information as procedures vary by citation method. Each citation method may have a different way of doing this.
FORMAT OF PAPER:
LENGTH
This paper must be typed in 12-point font, 1,000 words in length (no less than 950, no more than 1,050), double-spaced, properly cited/referenced throughout and have a Bibliography/References/Works Cited as the final page. You must also include a Word Count (not including title page and Works Cited) at the end of your paper. Papers that go under the minimum or over the maximum will be penalized.
