Task:
Develop a materia medica for two medicinal herbs covered in this unit of study
OVERVIEW:
You are required to select two (2) herbs that are covered within this subject and write a detailed materia medica for each.
A list of herbs can be found on the Subject Outline (SO) available to all students.
In order to address this task, your materia medica should include a response to the following areas:
1. Botanical and common name/s
2. Botanical Family
3. Part used medicinally
4. Major constituents
5. Actions
6. Therapeutic indications – Discuss the therapeutic potential of the herb on various disorders based on its empirical (traditional) use and modern knowledge. This information should be supported with evidence from scientific research.
7. Safety data – include contraindications, possible toxicity, adverse reactions, drug interactions or potential idiosyncratic reactions that may arise in certain populations as a result of use of the herb.
8. Forms of prescriptions including oral dosing (fluid extracts, tinctures, infusions, decoctions etc..) and external dosing (baths, creams, ointments, infused oils etc). These prescriptions should include the required amounts (either per dose, per day, per week or per manufacturing product) and include average dosage directions for each type of prescription (ie. take number of times per day, take with food/ on an empty stomach, apply affected area after bathing etc… )
9. Reference list – include one reference list at the end of your monograph including references from both of your chosen herbs.
