The death of J.K Rowling (don’t worry – she’s still alive)
I grew up being a Harry Potter obsessed child, especially when it came to the books and the author who wrote them. I believe that the Harry Potter series gave me the love for reading I have today and my idolisation of the characters truly led me into finding my own identity. I also absolutely loved J.K Rowling; this was the woman who brought so much happiness into my life and gave me another home to escape reality. I owed so much to her and think I still do for blessing me with Hogwarts and all of the beloved characters in the Wizarding World. However, when the term ‘Cancel Culture’ came up in our lectures this week and readings, I knew I just had to speak about what’s been happening in the Harry Potter fandom and how everyone has decided that J.K Rowling is officially #cancelled.
As described in the lecture, cancel culture often involves celebrities who are deemed ‘cancelled’ for their actions or words that are classified as unacceptable generally by users in online communities. According to Nakamura in the readings for this week, people often engage in this culture ‘by protesting hateful speech’ on platforms (pg. 110). When someone is cancelled, we see how this is put into effect and how different social media users respond almost immediately by condemning any hateful speech. Additionally, It’s almost like individuals have become mini FBI agents, quick to call out any inequalities or unjust actions made by celebrities. While this has its positives, I also think cancel culture can be extremely toxic as we have seen, for example, on YouTube in the past few years (i.e Tati and James Charles drama).
So why exactly has J.K Rowling been deemed cancelled? Let’s go back to the 19th of December, 2019 when Rowling tweeted this:
In brief, Rowling was supporting Maya Forstater, a British researcher who lost her job following a series of tweets that were criticised as transphobic. As soon as this tweet was tweeted, the internet BLEW UP. Numerous Twitter users immediately called out Rowling being transphobic and claimed her tweet was “dangerous”, as she was promoting hateful beliefs to over 14 million followers. In Kanai’s reading for this week, it is mentioned that a platform should be given to “feminists who are women of colour or who are trans women” (pg. 42), and I think Rowling’s actions prove why this is needed. Posting a tweet that could be labelled “transphobic” to her 14 million followers puts those who are transgender at a further risk of hatred actions and exclusion. It may fuel the continuous inequality these individuals face, particularly as Rowling is often idolised and her fans may blindly agree with her due to their lack of knowledge. If a platform had instead been given to a trans woman, for example, to speak on this issue, I think we would see a completely different approach to the situation; one that is more logical and thought through as they are the victims of transphobia. I believe that J.K Rowling, a white privileged woman, will never fully understand what trans people experience and from her recent actions, she does not appear to show a willingness to learn from her mistakes.
After Rowling’s tweet had blown up, it became clear that she had officially become a person who was cancelled, particularly by Harry Potter fans. Numerous tweets followed by particularly distraught fans who condemned Rowling for such behaviour. Additionally, stars of the Harry Potter films like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson publicly spoke out about their disagreement with Rowling’s claims, garnering support from the fandom.
Additionally, I also want to touch on something that happened around two months ago. J.K Rowling, alongside 150 writers and academics came together in a signed letter condemning culture. This letter continued to add to heated debates over ‘cancel culture’. For example, American Surgeon and scientist David Gorski tweeted: “I read the letter. It’s the same old whiny BS about ‘cancel culture’ from privileged people with large audiences complaining about facing criticism and consequences for their speech. I am unimpressed.” While I do often believe there are examples where cancel culture has gone too far, I do believe this is an example of a white privileged woman trying to deflect consequences of her actions which I, alongside many others, condemn.
If you thought this was over, I’m here to tell you that it isn’t. This situation has become recently worse as of around 20 hours ago with the #RIPJKRowling trending on twitter after it was announced she would be releasing a new novel about a male serial killer who dresses up as a woman.
On all social media platforms, there were examples of individuals partaking in cancel culture, with some fans even claiming they pretend that J.K Rowling never wrote the books. I keep seeing this especially on Tik Tok, and I think this really has been a unified movement by fans. Fans have now decided to remove the author from a franchise they love in order to keep enjoying it.
I feel the case of J.K Rowling really shows the power of cancel culture and how you can possibly be cancelled again and again. If people are not happy with what you preach or your actions, you will know about it. In my opinion, I think Rowling still doesn’t see anything wrong with her actions and has not taken away any learning from this “cancelling experience” which is highly problematic as her platform can continue to influence millions of people. I believe that social media users will continue a unified cancelling movement, showing their support for those who are trans and may feel excluded. I think this is the positive side of cancel culture; it allows for users globally to come together and fight against injustice. I guess you could consider it perhaps as free labour, however, there seems to be a willingness in this case. People want to do this, they want to show love to those affected by this.
I personally do not support Rowling’s actions and I believe that she continues to turn a blind eye to why her statements are problematic. However, I will still continue to enjoy my Harry Potter books and perhaps pretend they were written by Albus Dumbledore instead.
