Positive Psychology in the Military
Positive psychology is the study of conditions and processes that contribute to the flourishing or optimal functioning of people, groups, and institutions (Gable and Haidt, 2005, p. 103). The field of positive psychology at the personal level is about valued subjective experiences: well-being, contentment, and satisfaction (in the past); hope and optimism (for the future); and flow and happiness (in the present) (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000, p. 5). One way of applying positive psychology to the military is practicing resilience in stressful times. The military has master resilience training (MRT) is an excellent resource that the military has to practice positive psychology. MRT is provided to solidify how to practice resilience in our lives. MRT is a quarterly requirement to attend for units to conduct. As a leader, giving our subordinates a purpose and a way to achieve will generate a drive for our soldiers to accomplish the mission.
When units deploy, it can become a stressful indicator for soldiers. One of those stress indicators is family separations. The military offers numerous resources to assist families with the relief of the burden of the soldier member deploying. Positive psychology is applied in these cases by reassuring the soldier and family members that the military acknowledges the issues and has the resources to assist if needed. These resources allow the deploying soldier to focus on the deployment and accomplish the mission without creating additional stress by worrying about the family.
Another application of positive psychology is the awards system. We offer awards for recognition and accomplishments to soldiers. The awards system helps with showing soldiers what they are doing is acknowledged and reinforces the meaning of what they are doing in the military. The military also incorporated the Global Assessment Tool (GAT) to assess soldier’s well-being, resilience, and character strengths, as well as the usual deficits and problems (Seligman, 2019 p. 3.13). The GAT assists a soldier in assessing their physical and psychological health. The GAT tool is informative because it allows a soldier to see their strong and weak points. Positive psychology is applied in many aspects of the military and continues to develop to help our soldier’s members and (DOD) civilians.
