Setting up the Consultation
Consultation involves “collaborative brainstorming” with a consultee who is in an authority helping role with a third party (who may be the consultee’s child, student, supervisee, client, etc., or may even be a “system,” such as the school counseling program).
Although you are being consulted because of presumed expertise in understanding helping
relationships, you will still want to utilize your counseling skills. In fact, similar to counseling, it
is often helpful to take a “non-expert” position, also known as “one- down,” “the Columbo
technique,” and “playing the dumb consultant.”
You may choose to set up your consultation formally, such as by saying to a friend or colleague,
“hey, I have to do a consultation assignment for my class; could you help me out?” Alternatively,
your consultation may occur spontaneously or may even be ongoing. For example, a friend drops
by or calls you up and wants to talk about a parenting issue, or a teacher colleague requests your assistance in how best to work with a troublesome student in class.
Document the full history of your relationship with the consultee on the issue around which you
are consulting. You should have met for at least one “consultation hour” that took place within
the last six months. It is possible that your consultative relationship began before this meeting,
and it is also possible that it will continue for multiple sessions. Document as much of this as you are able to.
The “subject” of the consultation cannot be someone with whom your consultee is not in an
authoritative helping relationship. Examples of “clients” that would not be appropriate are
“spouse/partner of the consultee”.
It may be helpful to think about what you do successfully. What information and/or experience do you have, that would be helpful to a consultee?
Students will present this experience to the class, using the blog tool in Blackboard. That will
allow others to see how you set up your guidelines.
Recommendations for Documenting the Consultation Experience
Your documentation of your consultation experience for this course should summarize the consulting relationship to date, similar to doing a “case summary” of a client whom you are counseling.
It is recommended–though not required–that the consultation experience be tape recorded so that you can go back to it and process what took place.
First-person language is encouraged where appropriate.
