
Week 8 Assignment – Communication Plan
Overview
Congratulations on your progress so far in COM101! This assignment is exciting because you take all you have learned about your verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills and create a plan to steadily improve your communication skills over time.
Instructions
- As part of your prewriting for the "Letter to Your Future Self" assignment, which you will submit in Week 10, add a bulleted list or notes in which you:
- Explain the importance of having a communication plan.
- Explain the importance of constructive criticism.
- Identify strategies for monitoring your communication progress.
- Choose three specific areas of verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills you will improve on:
- Identify your strengths, weaknesses, and your plans to improve for the three specific areas you chose.
Examples:
- Verbal Communication – Listening:
- Strength: Listening to understand.
- Weakness: I can sometimes be afraid to ask questions.
- Plan to Improve: I will use my strength, and instead of asking a question, I will rephrase the message to check for understanding.
- Nonverbal Communication – Body Language:
- Strength: Smiling.
- Weakness: Eye contact.
- Plan to Improve: I will practice looking at the person I am talking to, even if at first I just look at their forehead.
- Written Communication – Email:
- Strength: Spelling and grammar.
- Weakness: Creating subject lines for emails.
- Plan to Improve: Practice creating concise and brief subject lines for emails.
- Verbal Communication – Listening:
- Identify your strengths, weaknesses, and your plans to improve for the three specific areas you chose.
- Sources list: Use at least one quality source in this assignment.
- Use correct sentence mechanics, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style.
