1PSYC 2007 – Cognitive PsychologyFirst semester 2020/21Guidelines for the Lab assignmentTraining of conducting experimental research is one of the key components in the studyof cognitive psychology. In this course, you will have a chance to experience the whole processof running an experiment. I hope this experience will provide you the necessary skills andconfidence in performing research in Cognitive Psychology in the future.Three useful tools will be introduced in this course: 1) Psychopy – It is a free software tocreate your experiment. It is easy to use – you can build your experiment by a drag-and-dropinterface; 2) Pavlovia.org – It is a platform for online data collection. You can upload yourPsychopy program to this platform and share the link to your participants to collect data. This isespecially useful when you cannot meet your participants face-to-face; 3) Jamovi – It is a freesoftware for statistical analysis. You can use it to analyze your data and create graphs with ashallow learning curve. In this lab assignment, you are required to conduct two experiments. The design of thefirst experiment is fixed, and a Psychopy program is provided. Each student is required to do theexperiment as a participant. Tutors will provide guidance in analyzing data and reporting thefindings. The second experiment is free for students to design a follow-up experiment. Students inthis course should form groups of 3-4 students. Each group needs to formulate a hypothesis, and prepares a Psychopy program for the experiment. The Psychopy program should then beuploaded to Pavlovia.org for online data collection. Tutors will provide guidance in formulatinghypotheses, preparing experiment programs, analyzing data, and reporting findings. These two experiments should be reported in one lab report. Each student is requiredto submit a draft to receive feedback from tutors. At the end of the semester, each studentshould submit a final report.2Deliverables

Draft of the Lab report● Should include (1) Introduction, (2) Experiment 1: method and result sections.● The introduction should include the hypotheses of both Experiment 1 and 2● This draft will count towards 15% of your final grade.● Submit by Oct 30 (Fri) 23:59 through Moodle.
Final report of the Lab report● Should include (1) Introduction, (2) Experiment 1: method and results sections,(3) Experiment 2: method and result sections. (4) Discussion and Conclusion● The word limit of this lab report is between 2,000 – 2,500 words (excludingreferences), and the Method sections should be no longer than 1000 words.● This lab report will count towards 35% of your final grade.● Submit by Nov 27 (Fri) 23:59 through Moodle.Experiment 1The purpose of Experiment 1 is to examine the Own-race effect in face recognition. It ishypothesized that the recognition performance of own-race faces is better than that of otherfaces. More background about the own-race effect will be provided in the tutorials. You will be provided a Psychopy program (the program can be found in Moodle) to runthe experiment, and collect data as a participant by yourself. You should calculate the accuracyin two conditions, and submit your data to a Google form (the link of the Google form can befound in Moodle). The data of each student will be shared with the whole class. Each studentshould analyze the data and report the findings. Here are the step-by-step instructions for Experiment 1.Step 1. Install PsychopyStep 1.1 For students using PC, please download Psychopy fromhttps://www.psychopy.org/download.html.For students using Mac, please follow Appendix A.Step 1.2 Install it.Step 2. Download the experiment programStep 2.1 Download the project file own-race-experiment.zip from Moodle.Step 2.2 Copy it to your favorite folder (e.g. your Desktop)Step 2.3 Unzip it.3Step 3. Run the program in PsychopyStep 3.1 Open PsychopyStep 3.2 Open the program: In “File > Open”, choose the ‘own-race-effect.psyexp’ file inyour unzipped folder (e.g. Desktop > own-race-effect-project > own-raceeffect.psyexp).Step 3.3 Run it: In “Tools”, choose Run. (And wait for 3 seconds.)Step 3.4 Do the experiment as a participant by yourself.Step 4. Calculate the accuracy scoresStep 4.1 The data file will be under the ‘data’ folder (e.g. Desktop > Data), which has theextension ‘csv’ (e.g. jc_own-race-effect_2020_Aug_21_1315.csv). Open it inExcel or Numbers.Step 4.2 Each row is for one trial you did in the experiment.Column img is the location of the image shown in the trial. If it is from the folder‘images_in_study_phase’, that means it is an image you’ve seen in the studyphase. If it is from the folder ‘images_not_in_study_phase’, it is a new image. And, if it is from the folder ‘asian’, it is an Asian face. If it is from the folder‘african’, it is an African face.Column key_response.keys is the key you typed (‘f’ is ‘seen before’, and ‘j’ isno).Step 4.3 Count the accuracies in Asian condition and in Afraican condition. (e.g. If theimage of a trial is from the ‘images_in_study_phase’, and you typed ‘f’ for ‘seenbefore’, this trial is correct.)If you are correct in the Asian condition for 12 trials, the accuracy for Asiancondition is 12/16 = 75%If you are correct in the Afraican condition for 10 trials, the accuracy for Africancondition is 10/16 = 62.5%Step 5. Submit the scores

Submit your scores to the Google form (the link can be found in Moodle) by Oct 2 23:59Step 6. Analyze the data of the whole class
Tutors will analyze the data with students together using Jamovi in Tutorial 2. Repeatedmeasure t-test will be used to examine if there is any significant difference between twoconditions.4Assistance for Steps 1-5 will be provided by tutors in Tutorial 1. Assistance for Step 6 will be inTutorial 2.Experiment 2In Experiment 2, students are free to design their own follow-up research question onExperiment 1. Students in this course should form groups of 3-4 students. Each group needs toformulate one hypothesis. Each group needs to prepare a Psychopy program. You can make changes to theprogram for Experiment 1 to become the program for Experiment 2. You can do this by simplyreplacing the stimuli (i.e. the images) in the program. Or, if you are confident enough, you canalso make changes in the settings in the program, or even write your own Psychopy program. The Psychopy program for Experiment 2 should then be uploaded to Pavlovia.org foronline data collection. Here are the step-by-step instructions for Experiment 2.Step 1. Prepare your experiment program● If the design of your experiment 2 is similar to experiment 1, you can make yourexperiment program simply by replacing the images.● You can replace the images under ‘stimuli/images_in_study_phase’ to images you wantto show in the study phase.● You can replace the images under stimuli/‘images_not_in_study_phase’ to images thatyou don’t want to show in the study phase.● All images in both folders will be shown in the test phase.● You need to update the image lists in ‘study_phase_image_list.csv’ and‘test_phase_image_list.csv’ under the ‘stimuli’ folder.● After finishing the changes, run the program on yourself in your computer, and check thedata to see if the program is correct.5Step 2. Send the teaching team your project folderFor Mac:Step 2.1 In your project folder, make sure you include all the files that you use as stimuliand the *.psyexp file.Step 2.2 Right-click on your project folder. Click on ‘Compress “(name of your projectfolder)”’.Step 2.3 You should see a .zip file next to your project folder now. Please upload this toyour HKU google drive.6For Windows:Step 2.1 In your project folder, make sure you include all the files that you use as stimuliand the *.psyexp file.Step 2.2 Right-click on your project folder. Move your cursor to “Send to” > “Compressed(zipped) folder”.Step 2.3 You should see a .zip file next to your project folder now. Please upload this toyour HKU google drive.7Step 3 Set up a google form for your data collection• Please think through your data analysis methodologies well in advance• You should have included all of the required variables here other than the accuracy info(i.e. if your hypothesis concerns about the year of study x performance, then you shouldhave included this question in your google form too!)Step 4 Submit your experiment 2 by completing the submission form on Moodle(Only 1 student per group should complete the form)• Please generate a sharable link for the zipped project folder from your HKU googledrive.• Please generate a sharable link for the data collection google form.• Please make sure you have the appropriate privacy setting for both the google drive fileand google formStep 5 Data analysis. Analyze your data using Jamovi.Assistance for Steps 1-3 will be provided by tutors in Tutorial 4. Assistance for Step 4 will be inTutorial 6.Face databaseWe use the face images from this database: http://ninastrohminger.com/the-mr2. Pleaseacknowledge their work in your lab report according to their requirements stated in the website.AssessmentsA good lab report in this project should:

Formulate a hypothesis that is suitable to be tested in the current setting
Use appropriate data analysis methods
Explain the findings objectively based on evidence
Clear reporting8General guidelines● The lab reports should be typed. Formatting: 12-point Times New Roman font, singlespaced, one-inch margin at all edges.● APA style should be followed.● You only need to submit a softcopy through Moodle (Turnitin).ResourcesYou may find the following documents/website helpful:● Eisenberg (2014). You might need it for your thesis!Step 1. Upload it to PavloviaStep 1.1 In Psychopy, select Pavlovia.org > SyncStep 1.2 If you are asked to register an account, do so. Do Step 2.1 again.Step 1.3 It will show you that you didn’t create a project for this program file. Choose‘Create a project’.9Step 1.4 Enter a name for the project, and check ‘Public’. Then click ‘Create project onPavlovia’.Step 1.5 You may add any text in the ‘summary of changes’ to describe the changes youhave made. Click ‘OK’.Step 1.6 If successful, you will see ‘Successful sync’.Step 1.7 In the dashboard in Pavlovia (https://pavlovia.org/dashboard), choose theExperiment tab. You will see your project. Click on it.Step 1.8 Your project is now inactive. You can click Piloting (the orange button) in thebottom to make it active to pilot. (If you didn’t see the bottom three buttons, please checkif you have successfully logged in to the platform.)10Step 1.9 You can get the link to your project at the ‘Pilot’ button in the middle section ofthis page.Step 1.10 ‘Piloting’ is free and ‘Running’ needs credits● Piloting your experiment is free. You can use the link for one hour. And the datafile will be downloaded at the participants’ browser when he/she finishes theexperiment. You may ask them to send you back the data file.● You may choose to do ‘Running’. It requires you to pay for the credits to do so. Ifyou do that, there is no time limit for the link of the experiment, and you candownload the data on the platform without asking your participants to send youback the files.Step 2. Share the link for data collectionStep 2.1 Send the link of your experiment to your participants.Step 2.2 Ask them to send you back the data files if you’re doing ‘piloting’.11Appendix A.
