Overview:
 
For your rhetorical analysis assignment this semester, we will spend time reading, watching, and studying Raoul Peck’s film I Am Not Your Negro based on the unpublished manuscript “Remember This House” by James Baldwin. Baldwin was an author and activist, who believed that his words had the power to tell an untold story in America, and move people to action. As Amiri Baraka wrote: “This man traveled the earth like its history and its biographer. He reported, criticized, made beautiful, analyzed, cajoled, lyricized, attacked, sang, made us think, made us better, made us consciously human…”
 
For your rhetorical analysis assignment, we will spend time watching, “reading,” and studying Raoul Peck’s film I Am Not Your Negro. We will study Peck’s film at the level of both form and content—that is, we will study the rhetorical choices the filmmaker made in order to present certain arguments and to make certain points. Furthermore, we will consider seriously film’s ability to change public perception and to move people to action. By studying both the rhetorical effectiveness and multimodal rhetoric in the film I Am Not Your Negro, we will write our own analysis of the film, studying it both rhetorically and thinking critically about the arguments made by Peck as filmmaker and in turn the arguments made by Baldwin as writer.

Your Multimodal analysis should include a thoughtful discussion of the following:

Why did you choose this section of I Am Not Your Negro?
Why is it relevant to you?
What is the argument/commentary being presented on this issue?
What rhetorical appeals are utilized to make the persuasive argument effective? (For example, is Peck appealing to pathos in this scene?)
Who is the message intended for (who is the audience), and how you know?
Why is this message circulating now, and how is it relevant to the needs of our society? (this is a question of kairos). This is also where you will make your own argument for or against the argument of Baldwin’s you have chosen.

Why is a visual medium appropriate for communicating this specific argument/commentary? Would an essay have been more persuasive?
What are the effects of the uses of archival footage, contemporary footage, voiceover, and text on screen?

Why did you choose this scene of I Am Not Your Negro? (Use 1-2 quotes you’ve started to free-write about in class + revisit the film [on Moodle] to find the scene the quote is from to understand the visual context for the quote)
Why is it relevant to you? (explain in your own words!)
What is the argument/commentary being presented on this issue? (explain in your own words!)
What rhetorical appeals are utilized to make the persuasive argument effective? (you must write about at least one rhetorical appeal [ethos, pathos, or logos])
Who is the message intended for, and how you know? (this is a question of audience, one of our key terms)
Why is this message circulating now, and how is it relevant to the needs of our society? (this is a question both of Kairos and context; you may have to do some research and think about the “historical context” the film is coming out in. Hint: the film makes this pretty self-evident what it is responding to and it is probably apparent that we are still living within a similar historical context as Baldwin was when he was writing in the 60’s)
