The ‘Annotated Bibliographies’ Presentation**See a sample of a proposal paragraph and annotation on the following page.Annotated Bibliography SampleProposal:Due to the ever-expanding reach of gambling into the conglomerate, advertising, social, and personalspheres, society has embraced gambling as a recreational and cultural norm; however, gambling – a practiceintended for individuals of or over a certain legal age – has filtered through the barriers that separate adult andadolescent conventions and practices. Due to the alluring prospects of social mobility, wealth, and selfsatisfaction, gambling advertisements may be one of the leading causes in increasing gambling behaviouramong adolescents. In analysing factors of socialisation such as socioeconomic status, parenting practices, andmarginality, I hope to explore adolescents’ motivations for gambling and how gambling advertisements – withits portrayal of idealised personal and societal goals – may impact their gambling habits.Annotations:Barnes, Grace M., et al. “Gambling and Alcohol Use among Youth: Influences of Demographic, Socialization, and Individual Factors.” Addictive Behaviors, vol. 24, no. 6, Jan. 1999, pp. 749–767. EBSCOhost,doi:10.1016/S0306-4603(99)00048-9.In their article, Barnes et al. explore common predictors – such as an individual’s socioeconomic status, parental influence, psychological factors, and other problem behaviours – that may affect an adolescent’sdecision to participate in gambling practices or indulge in alcohol use. Through two studies, the authorsexamine these predictors to determine the “co-occurrence of gambling behaviors and alcohol use in youth”(750). In their longitudinal studies, the authors analyse the effect of family influences in the development ofalcoholic behaviours in adolescents (Study 1) and the relationship between increasing delinquent behaviour andalcohol abuse/gambling in male adolescents (Study 2) (753-754). The results of their studies determine thatthere is a correlation between gambling and alcohol consumption, and that both gambling and alcohol abuse canbe linked to social, parental, psychological, and other problem factors (763-764). Although it is an older article, the content of this article is particularly relevant to my research topic as it explores the effects of parentalinfluence and socioeconomic factors on problem gambling issues among adolescents. However, more recentarticles have contradicted the authors’ claims that “socioeconomic status was not a clear or strong predictor ofgambling” (763-764). Additionally, the authors limit their research to internal factors and do not include oracknowledge external factors such as advertisements and portrayals of gambling and alcohol use in televisionseries. Overall, though, the studies were conducted over seven and five years (respectively), which has allowedfor numerous data collection and analysis. I will use this article to support my claims that adolescents withgambling parents are predisposed to have gambling habits as well.*Keep in mind that your annotated bibliography should be double-spaced.
