General adaptation syndrome (GAS) is a three-stage physiological process the body may go through when faced with stress (Nevid & Rathus, 2016). The GAS response stages are an alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. The alarm stage is the familiar “fight-or-flight†response that most of us have experienced at some time in our lives when faced with a stressful circumstance. The alarm stage is the bodyâ€s reaction to either run or stand and protect yourself in a dangerous situation or a threatening life stressor. The bodyâ€s physical response in the alarm stage includes an increased heart rate and the release of cortisol by the adrenal gland to increase adrenaline for energy in the event running is needed. The second phase is the resistance stage. In the second stage, a bodyâ€s heart rate and blood pressure begin to stabilize as the initial shock wears off. During this phase, your body stays on high alert, releases low levels of cortisol until the stress situation is resolved. Your body goes through changes that you may not realize as a way to cope with and adapt to the higher stress level if the stress is unresolved. If the resistance stage continues for an extended period, the body continues to secrete cortisol, and your blood pressure remains elevated. A person is irritable, frustrated, and has reduced concentration with prolonged stress. Staying in the resistance phase will lead to the third stage of stress. The exhaustion stage drains your physical, emotional, and mental resources. You begin to feel hopeless. Signs of the exhaustion stage include, fatigue, burnout, depression, anxiety and decreased stress tolerance. Your immune systems also become compromised which could lead to stress-related illnesses such as allergies, heart disease and even death (Nevid & Rathus, 2016).
There are two things stressful for me as an online student. First is juggling my time between work and class work. I worked a stressful job that required my full attention between 40 and 60 hours per work. I would then go home to try and read my textbook and promptly fall asleep. I always felt behind in my assigned reading which was stressful and had me worried that I would not pass my class or the next test. What I did to combat my inability to stay awake and read was I combined walking with my reading by purchasing a cross-country ski machine for home use and an adjustable book stand. I started working out and learning at the same time. Also, incorporating time management skills in my home life, saying no to taking on additional tasks, and being as prepared as possible each week for work and class work as described by Nevid & Rathus (2016) helped me manage my stress. All this changed mid-year in 2017 when given the opportunity to leave my job and make my focus my last few classes and finish my degree. But I still walk and read my textbook, now just for different reasons. The second thing that stresses me out with the online school is timed essay exams. No matter how prepared I am, my brain likes to ponder the questions before responding. I do not know if this is because of my age (60) or the way I process information. No matter what, I get very anxious when I read the mid-terms and finals and timed essay tests, and I stock up on cookies and chips to get myself to sit still and focus on the test and force myself to answer the questions as best I can. And I assume that I will fail every time. As of yet, I have not failed an exam, although I know my responses would be better if I did not have the “time limit panic†that sweeps over me. Although my eating issue has improved since I am no longer working, I still feel the anxiety wash over me thinking about a timed essay test. I have tried breathing techniques, and self-talk to rewrite my beliefs as suggested by Nevid and Rathus (2016). If any of you have suggestions on how to get over this stress I will gladly listen.

The general adaptation syndrome deals with how the body responds to stress. It outlines the different sequences that the body goes through when stress is involved. There are three different stages to the general adaptation syndrome, which are, the alarm stage, the resistance stage, and the exhaustion stage. The alarm stage gets the body ready to defend itself from stress. The alarm stage can be also known as the fight or flight reaction (Nevid & Rathus, 2016). The resistance stage is used when the body is attempting to replenish lost energy from dealing with stress (Nevid & Rathus, 2016). The exhaustion stage happens when a body has been dealing with stress for a prolonged period of time. In result, the body begins to experience muscle fatigue; the body loses all of its resources to combat the stress, and could lead to stress related disorders (Nevid & Rathus, 2016).
The main stress that I deal with during online classes is having to many things to accomplish with what seems like not enough time in the day. This week for example, I am studying for the advancement exam I have in three days, two qualification boards I have to complete by Friday, and two online classes, as well as the daily routine with two children, and preparing to deploy in the near future. I manage the stress by using predictability and control, as well as optimism (Nevid & Rathus, 2016). I plan out each week and set aside a certain amount of time for my classes, and if I do not meet my deadline on something, I do my best to remain optimistic about the upcoming week. This allows me to remain in control of my day instead of shooting from the hip each day.
