Terminating employees is one of the most unpleasant aspects of management and the HR field. What strikes you as important in this article about the best practices to use in the termination process?
I believe that when terminating employees HR and managers should treat people with dignity and leave emotions out of the termination process. I’ve been part of the termination team and I know how unpleasant this can be. I’ve seen people get angry and walk out and then I’ve seen them get very emotional and cry. I agree with the article that the meeting should be brief and state the facts. Usually the employee wants to discuss their side of the story and compare another employees wrongdoings with theirs. This is where you have to be careful. We always had a meeting before hand and then we would have documentation of counseling sessions keeping to the facts if the employee asked questions. It is policy that people terminated would be escorted back to their office and then escorted off property. Unfortunately, everyone knows one another and if they see the security guard with someone carrying a box, then they all know what is taking place.
