Jonathon McIntoshâ€s Buffy vs. Edward (Twilight Remixed)
A vid is a combination of two different pre-existing media (e.g. films, television series, etc.) sources with no relationship to each other into a new and unified creation. Typically in vid tradition, one form of media is used to offer a critique and/or an interpretation of a specific form of media. Rebellious Pixels (McIntoshâ€s vid handle) uses the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer to critique Edward Cullen. Essentially, this vidâ€s final product is a new narrative or storyline, so you do not to possess knowledge regarding the film Twilight or the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You donâ€t need to know anything about Buffy except that she slays Vampires. Just as you donâ€t need to know anything about Edward other than that he pursues the Vampire Slayer. So if you are a fan of either of these forms of media, then be sure that you do NOT apply any knowledge regarding the film or tv series to this vid because the vid is an entirely new storyline.
1. What argument does this vid advance regarding Edwardâ€s idea of romance? Explain how the visual features (e.g. framing, mise en scene, lighting, clothing, subject matter, etc.) work to communicate and support these arguments.
2. A gender role is a societal norm that outlines the types of behavior that are considered appropriate or acceptable for people based on their actual or perceived sex. In McIntoshâ€s vid, Edwardâ€s unrelenting pursuit of Buffy works to dictate specific gender roles for himself as well as for the Vampire Slayer. What gender roles does Edwardâ€s idea of romance dictate that he and Buffy should perform? How does Buffy respond to these gender roles? Explain how the visual features (e.g. angles, clothing, music, dialogue, framing, lighting, focus, etc. ) support your reading.
3. At the end of the vid, Buffy walks through the cemetery with her arms crossed, scanning the cemetery. What do the last few scenes of Buffy walking through the cemetery communicate about the impact of Edwardâ€s “romance†on Buffy? Be sure to pay attention to the lyrics of the song that plays throughout these scenes. Consider how the lyrics work to help us understand why Buffy walks throughout the cemetery after she has eliminated Edward. (It would help to put the captions on while this last scene plays, so you donâ€t miss the lyrics.)
