Then write 10 little short answers. Just about 4-6 sentences for each short answers.

Five of the short answer questions will consist of two images from the chapters which you will compare and contrast. You will be asked to quickly find similarities and differences that go beyond the obvious. This may be about different technologies at work, different roles for artists, Public versus private art, utilitarian, etc. The similarities may be in handling of form, or the subject matter, etc. The idea is that you can apply what you have learned to disparate objects that the book does not make a direct connection to.
The other five short answer questions will specifically ask you a question about a particular work of art. There are specific sections to each chapter. I will take a work from a different chapter and ask you to explain how it would relate to one of the major topics within each chapter. The idea is that we continue to cross pollinate across chapters.
The two essays are very open-ended. One of the essays will ask you to examine the relationship of the form and content of images to the cultures that produced them. It is about relating ways in which each culture creates a system of signs & symbols and a method of delivering them.
The other essay will ask you to apply what you have learned to a particular object/event/artistic expression. You will be able to use your knowledge from the entire course to answer the question.
