Discussion Response
I have worked in the mental health field for almost 14 years. So, I have worked with adults that have been diagnosed with one or more of the disorders presented in chapter 8. I am a program specialist for a non-profit organization, where I manage a residential facility with three male adults with dual diagnosis. Despite my experience with the disorders, I find conversion disorder to be one that I am unfamiliar with. I find it interesting that there are no medical findings to explain the loss of functioning in this disorder. Also, the added indifference is confusing (Nevid & Rathus, 2016.) I would think if I experienced unexplained loss of eyesight or paralysis, I would be very concerned. The reason I find this particular disorder hard to understand is that there are so many unknowns and unproven reasons that this can occur to someone.
Considering there aren’t any symptoms or medical findings for what causes this disorder, I would suggest cognitive therapy. Simply because the focus is on developing healthier thoughts and beliefs. The indifference that comes with conversion disorder is what could be addressed with my family member through cognitive therapy. Teaching and encouraging someone to develop more rational thought, could help with recognizing the loss of functioning that occurs with a diagnosis of conversion disorder. (Nevid & Rathus, 2016.)
