Description
Using Maus I or II you will write, at minimum, a three page paper responding to ONE of the questions below about either text. This is a thesis driven essay; your thesis will essentially be your answer to the question. Once you have come to a conclusion about the text in your thesis, you will then spend the rest of your paper backing up your conclusion with examples directly from the text. This FORMAL essay is worth 15% of your grade. BE sure to proofread. Do not use the first person, “I” in this essay. This is a close analysis paper which will take you through at least two or three more good readings of your chosen text. This time you are reading for the more subtle details you might have overlooked the first time through. You are asking questions as you go along, where is this taking place? Why is it taking place? Who is the main character? What is the theme? Are there any metaphors? Who is the protagonist, antagonist? What is the conflict? What’s under the surface? What does this object or idea symbolize? Why did the writer use this form, point of view, structure, metaphor, symbol, etc? The answers to these questions will lead you to make an interpretation about the meaning of the text. Remember, you are making an interpretation and then backing it up with specific examples from the text. The Questions Maus I Maus is an autobiographical graphic novel, as such it is as much a representation of self (Artie) as much as it is of his father, Vladek. What sets this apart from traditional auto-biographical and biographical tales is that it is also a visual representation of self and others. Analyze the book and discuss how the visual representations on the pages symbolize the Artie’s representation of himself and of his father. Discuss moments such as Page 12 where Vladek physically overshadows Artie during their discussion; what for example does this say about Artie? About the way Artie feels about his father? Find other examples within the text. What are Vladek’s virtues and what are his faults? Are the virtues that are a part of his survival skills during the Holocaust those which become character flaws later in his life. Discuss specific moments within the text. Also consider whether his virtues/flaws are a true reflection of him or if they are shadowed by Artie’s representation of him. Maus II The opening includes an overview of what happened after Maus I. Why does Spiegelman do this? How does it add to your understanding of the story of Vladek’s life? Discuss the struggle between Artie and Vladek and each of their struggles to survive. Do they ever achieve any resolution? Discuss very specific moments from the text. The comics combine words and pictures. We know how to read words, but how do we “read” pictures? Look for general and specific examples of images as “text” in Maus? How do Spiegelman’s images supplant or circumvent words? Below are some examples to consider: Page 42, and the following pages, Art shrinks and grows and shrinks again. Why? Explain what the pictures express. What do the masks on these pages mean? Assess the significance of Art smoking all the time. How often does the smoke squiggle appear? Describe, for example what is happening symbolically on pg. 69 with the smokestack in the bottom right corner and the panel above it. Look at the panel at the bottom of page 79. Try to assess the importance of the words and the pictures.
