CASE #2 – CLIENT INFORMATION: SANDY
Sandy (32 years) is seeking supportive counselling services. She believes counselling may be helpful to her as she attempts to re-involve herself in the life of her three biological children. Sandy’s children are Mark (16 years), Andrew (10 years) and Angie (5).
Mark (16) resides with his biological father Derek (36), and Derek’s parents in Brantford, ON. Sandy describes Derek as having longstanding drug addiction issues. Sandy has not had any contact with this son for over 10 years and is finding that since Mark is now 16 (the age she was when she gave birth to Mark) she is thinking a lot about him. She wonders whether she should reach out to him and re-establish contact. Of her departure from her son Mark’s life – Sandy describes that she met someone else (Sam) while she was in a relationship with Derek, and left in order to pursue her involvement with Sam when she was 21 years of age. She states that at that time in her life she was “a bad mother,” and thought Mark would be better off without her.
Andrew (10) and Angie (5) are full siblings. These two children were born of Sandy’s relationship with Sam (32). Throughout Sandy’s relationship with Sam, Sandy and Sam were both heavily involved in substance abuse. Cocaine was their drug of choice. Their relationship was marked by violence and drug addiction. Sandy suggested that drugs for her served as a necessary escape from a life that she found overwhelming. She has no real memory of the first 5 years of Andrew’s life and left shortly after the birth of Angie. She states that her leaving these children was motivated primarily be her desire to “save herself” believing that if she did not leave, “one of the members of this family was going to end up dead.” She has since learned that Sam’s parents have secured formal custody of these two children. She has tried to write Andrew and Angie letters and is not sure whether they get them. Sandy believes that these children presently reside with their paternal grandparents in Hamilton.
For the past 6 years Sandy has been “surviving” and trying to rid herself of her cocaine addiction. She entered drug rehab twice, and the second time she was able to “remain clean.” She feels her life has stabilized and she is now focused on trying to get healthy. She has been drug- free now for one year. She is currently at an Adult Education Centre to upgrade her high school marks. She hopes to do an Accounting course at the College level. She currently holds a part-time job at a pizza place on evenings and weekends which pays her bills.
Of her own family of origin, Sandy describes that there was much addiction and family violence in her home growing up. She describes her father as an alcoholic Italian, and her mother as Aboriginal of the Huron Tribe. Sandy grew up in severe poverty in the downtown core of Hamilton, ON. She has one older brother who also struggles with addiction. She does not maintain contact with her parents but is in contact with her brother. Sandy currently lives alone. She prefers to be on her own at this life phase. Presently, Sandy considers herself to be more emotionally stable, and she would like to re-establish contact with her kids. She seeks counselling that will support her in this goal.
