Assignment 1: First Person Essay–tell the story of a moment in your life. Drafts: due on Mondays of Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4. Upload drafts into “Assignments.” Length: the Final Draft (due in Week 4) will be at least 4 pages double-spaced. There’s no upper limit. And some of you will be surprised by how much you write in the end. Context: In our first paper I want you to free yourself and WRITE. Start to trust your voice again, rediscover your confidence, make a bridge to the reader. The assignment is to write a non-fiction first person narrative, exactly as the writers we’ll be reading have done. Writing Task: Choose a moment from your life that a) seems insignificant on the surface yet b) haunts your memory. Explore the moment on paper—using detail, dialogue, description—until you discover what it’s all about, you discover its meaning. In the paper you can fill in backstory. But I want the paper to be built around one specific moment that sticks in your head. It’s stuck in your memory and you’re not sure why. For Example: A moment of tension between you and your mom. A moment of extreme loneliness. A moment of regret for something you’ve done. A moment in which you asked a question you’d never asked before. A scrap of memory from junior high. Or from high school. Or from last month. DON’T write about something huge: Your plane landing at LAX. Your parents’ divorce. Your car accident. Your relative’s death. AND DON’T write a lesson: About a homeless person you met. About how you were a brat child, then you realized your parents only wanted the best for you. About how you played too many computer games, then stopped. AND DON’T even think about rewriting something you’ve written about before. Instead: write about a moment that shimmers like a film scene in your mind. It’s powerful for some unknown reason. It calls to you. Something happened, but you’re not sure what. Your mind has held onto it for a reason. But what’s the reason? Write to find out. I want this to be the best thing, and the truest thing, you’ve ever written. These are the three basic movements of a story. As readers we demand all three. Think of any story or film as an example as you read these notes (an Avengers film is fine). Character: we meet a character, we find out some of their backstory, their history, what made them. We learn their likes, their dislikes, their quirks. The person is sharp and real. The details are vivid. Conflict: but there’s trouble. The character is battling something. It could be external–an enemy or an asteroid approaching Earth. Or it could be internal–their own anger, lack of confidence, self-hatred. Or it could be both. People say that Stan Lee’s genius was in how he understood that superheroes can’t just be fighting external battles. The real battle is on the inside (think of Tony Stark in Iron Man), for example. Because Tony Stark’s conflicts are external and internal he becomes real, we believe in him, and the story works. Change: at the end, in the resolution of the conflict, we want to see that the character has changed. They’ve learned something, grown, altered, been shifted. They’re never going to see the world the same as they did before. In a film, the camera goes in on the character’s face and we see it. We see that this is a different person than the person in the start of the movie. So, in your Assignment 1: keep these three things in mind. Your reader wants to know your character. Wants to go deeply into the conflict with you. Wants to see how it changed you. However, for your Rough Draft in particular, your task is the exploration of your Character and Conflict. In other words, don’t have the Change already in mind if you can possibly help it. And don’t race toward that Change or realization. For the Rough Draft of Assignment 1 it might be best if you limit yourself to a deep development of Character and Conflict. That way the Change will emerge authentically.
