Description
In our second unit, we are reading about how the technological transformations we have been living through are affecting everyday life and creating new problems and challenges for the world. Some of these changes include: the rise of artificial intelligence and automation; big data; sophisticated surveillance by private corporations and governments; and big nudging, to name a few.  In your second paper, you will do the following:  Establish the subject of your paper: a specific problem or challenge created by technological change. Establish the reality of this subject by explaining the facts with sources from our class readings and your own research. Be sure that all your sources are strong and pass the C.R.A.A.P test.  Explain the values at stake in how your sources frame the facts and approach the problem. This is to say, not only do you have to establish the facts, you have to understand and communicate to your audience how each of your sources arguments, conclusions, or recommendations is grounded in one or more values.   In the final part of the paper, state your own position on the problem, informed by the key facts, and reflect on the values through which you choose to frame the problem. What do you value that makes you respond to the facts in the way that you do?  Values: While you now have a good understanding of how to investigate and establish facts, this paper asks you to add another skill and dimension to your analysis: identifying and analyzing values. Values are not like facts. They are not objective or universal. Take privacy, for instance. In different societies at different times, people have valued privacy in different ways. Some societies, like East Germany in the second half of the twentieth century of North Korea today, do not value privacy for their citizens at all. In societies like these, every thought and action is deemed to be of interest to the government, and they do all they can to make sure the government knows exactly what others are thinking and doing at all times. Some societies value privacy much more. In the European Union countries, there are strict laws that insure that governments and corporations are far more limited in what they can know about individuals and what they can make public about an individual. Values can even change from generation to generation. Americans in the twentieth century valued privacy intensely, and were constantly worried about governments and corporations not respecting privacy. Today, many people using google and social media do not value privacy, and we happily share data about every aspect of their lives with these corporations and do not consider our privacy to be a problem at all. If we see the fact of data collection as a problem will be determined by how we value privacy. So, we can see that unlike facts, values are neither objective nor universal. In a debates over something like privacy, facts alone are not the whole story. What we might value, things like privacy, freedom, community, security, compassion, health, stability, status, peace, wealth, equality, opportunity, etc. will matter as much in how we think about the problem and how we respond to the facts as the facts themselves. Indeed, without understanding what we value, and how the values of others might differ from our own, we will not be able to understand the world or to act effectively in it.    Sources: Your paper must include the following:  One source from our class readings Four sources from the Prestige Press Two scholarly (peer-reviewed) sources Establish the credibility of each source by following the Purdue OWL sections on “Evaluating Sources of Information” (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/conducting_research/evaluating_sources_of_information/where_to_begin.html) and then applying the CRAAP test: (https://library.csuchico.edu/help/source-or-information-good). The response from my teacher: There are issues with plagiarism in your current draft.  An issue I’m seeing throughout your paper is that you are using exact phrases or almost whole sentences from sources. I haven’t chased all of them down, but I can tell they are there. This is essentially plagiarism. For instance, you write, “Ethical norms act as guidelines and instruments used to measure and formulate the bestway of dealing with personal privacy.” This is almost the exact sentence that J. J. Britz has in his online paper, “Applicable ethical norms which can act as guidelines as well as instruments of measurement must be formulated to address these ethical issues.” You do not cite Britz as a source, so this is clearly plagiarism, which is serious.  The whole paper seems like a bits and pieces of other sources that you have stitched together. Your voice and perspective doesn’t seem to be here, and there are all sorts of contexts that seem to be missing, as if this was written for a very different audience.   You are giving us blizzards of facts and information, but we don’t know where much of it is coming from. You aren’t carefully introducing your sources using the CRAAP test, and you aren’t making making it clear where each piece of information is coming from. It is also required that you include brief quotations from the sources you are using, and these are almost wholly absent.  It feels like this paper was written for another course or occasion.  It also looks like you are following APA instead of MLA style.
