In his discussion of postmodernism, Frederic Jameson insists that it is a cultural logic of a particular period of capitalism, namely late capitalism. Jameson then identifies certain “constitutive features” of the postmodern that can be found in our cultural forms. Two very productive categories are pastiche (empty copy) and schitzophrenia (lack of history). Literary theorist Frederic Jameson is one of the preeminent theorists of postmodernism. In his book Postmodernism or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, Jameson argues that postmodernism is not simply a cultural & artistic transformation to a new ethic of humankind, but instead, that it is driven by broader transformations in capitalism. Thus he argues that postmodernism is the dominant cultural logic in the contemporary period and it is driven by broader changes in how capitalism (or late capitalism) operates. Thus, postmodern contemporary art forms, are in fact reflecting back at us a set of broader values that work, consciously or unconsciously, to embed us in the late capitalist system. Jameson then goes on to identify two specific cultural forms of the postmodern: the pastiche and the schitzophrenic (pps 197-203). Building on his analysis, choose a cultural text (TV, film, art, architecture, music) and critically analyze through one or both of these categories. Make sure to connect it to broader theories of postmodernism as well as Jamesons specific ideas.
