Definition of the Topic

Plastic of plastic surgery can be traced back to 1600 BC among Egyptians. During that time, people were concerned about their appearance and beauty standards. Today, the practice has been enhanced by a rapid technological transformation in the medicine area, where plastic surgeons can truly transform results. The most popular type of plastic surgery focuses on changing the size and shape of different body parts. Recent data show that people undergoing cosmetic surgery are constantly on the rise.

While the practice is currently across nations worldwide, the practice is noticeable in some countries than others. UAE is cited as one of the country with he highest number given the rising demand for plastic surgery among youths, especially university students. In a recent report by Dubai Health Authority, the country has the highest ration of plastic surgeons per capita across the globe, with about 50 doctors for every million people. In a 2017 report by Bell (2019), 70% of those pursuing the practice is between 20 to 40 years, where 68.3% are employed.  Most people pursue plastic surgery as a cosmetic procedure to make a face and body more attractive (Agha & Orgill, 2016).

What other Authors have Written about the Topic

Agha & Orgill (2016) notes that both procedures have physical and psychological benefits to the patient irrespective of the purpose. In essence, reconstructive is considered beneficial to patients in terms of physical and mental health. People who have undergone reconstructive end up gaining their health, in turn becoming a part of the society without any previous feeling ashamed of the infirmity or atypical physical appearance. Galanis et al. (2013) give an example of a person who has incurred severe burns on their hands and the problems associated when they fail to undergo reconstructive surgery. This can be concluded that reconstructive surgery is a necessity. On the other hand, cosmetic surgery is founded on other people’s perceptions regarding others’ behaviors or appearance. Besides, previous studies have shown that an individual whose physical appearance does not meet the set beauty standards is more likely to develop an inferiority complex, which results in feelings of stress or depression. Furthermore, the state of being depressed or stressed implies that a person cannot function properly in their life.

In a study by Lorenzo et al. (2018), people with physical and psychological problems and later undergo plastic surgery tend to portray higher self-esteem and improved quality of life.  This can be argued from the perspective that after undergoing plastic surgery, people start developing confidence in society and overcome the issue of self-esteem. Besides, in another study, individuals reported experiencing positive changes after the practice (Lorenzo et al., 2018). In essence, many women established that they increased their number of suitors after the procedure. Others confessed to increase chances of finding a job or succeeding in work after cosmetic surgery.

Regardless of the identified benefits, plastic surgery can result in a number of the negative psychological outcome. In essence, Honigman et al. (2004) noted that “Most people seeking cosmetic surgery appear psychologically healthy; however, some are not.” Unsatisfactory results may incur when individuals hold on to impractical expectations or feelings of anxiety and depression. Notably, when individuals become discontented with the procedure’s result, most tend to suffer depression, which amounts to other problems, including domestic, social, or work problems. Occasionally, unsatisfied patients may request the repeat of the procedure, often showing anger towards the surgeon or family members. This is the reason why numerous researchers establish the need for more research on doctors to test patients of any underlying psychological issues before commencing the procedure (Honigman et al., 2004).

The problem in the Field

Addiction to plastic surgery among the youth has been on the rise, which calls for concern, given its debilitating effect. A study conducted by Kuttab (2018) in UAE suggests that the number of youths pursuing plastic surgery tends to vary with gender, with females being the most affected. In another study, the researchers established that poor body image among individuals was the key driver to the problem of addiction. He noted two key signs for addiction to include out of reach expectation and unable to listen to advice from the surgeon. More research is needed to establish more warning signs that can help mitigate the problem, which appears to affect the youth at most.

A person addicted to plastic surgery ends up repeating the procedure over and over. While the central intention is to enhance their appearance, they end up making it look worse instead of better. More recently, there has been a growing concern for persons addicted to adjusting their appearance and the often-unpredictable sad results. Studies show that when youth grows up with poor body image, they are more likely to become increasingly delusional over time, in turn pursuing plastic surgery to get satisfied with their appearance. Addressing this problem will provide much-needed insights to help youth who might end up being victims of the practice to start appreciating themselves. It will also contribute to gaining a more nuanced understanding of the devastating impact that results when one becomes an addict to plastic surgery.

Research Question: “To what level plastic surgery took the youth to be addict on it?”

Thesis statement: Addiction to plastic surgery is a real problem and can cause disturbing effects on youths’ lives and should be treated as a serious illness.

The implication of the Study

While plastic surgery may be compounded with controversies given the adverse outcome associated with it, a growing number of youths have become addicted to the procedure. Unfortunately, many forget that the procedure can have both rewarding and devastating effects that seem to prevail most time. However, by understanding the implication associated with the practice, getting proper guidance, and learning to accept and appreciate their appearance, the current rapidly growing addiction level can be curbed.  Besides, an addict’s extent has been linked to the patient’s pre-operative prospects and their pre-operative psychological and emotional states. Basically, youth need to be aware of what the procedure entails and the overall repercussions after becoming addicted. More so, they need to be informed that there is no such thing as “physical perfection,” which a majority seek to achieve. Overall, every youth projecting to undergo the procedure need to understand that to a certain degree, each person may undergo some comfortabilities and develop insecurities with their appearance, which they need to accept and move on.
