HNR 101 – Independent Research Essay and Reflection – 10% of Course Grade
The primary purpose of HNR 101 is to give students experience in pursuing complex topics using creativity, methodological rigor, and intellectual curiosity. To this point in the semester, we have collaboratively explored a course theme, and we have practiced strategies for exploring research questions using that theme. Now, it is time for you to venture off on your own to complete your own research project, focused on a topic that interests you. If you would like to develop your topic based on an earlier assignment in HNR 101, or take our classwork as inspiration, you are welcome to do so, but if you have an idea that is unrelated to common course material, that is fine as well. You may not, however, submit a research paper composed for another course for this assignment; doing so will result in a grade of zero.
Assignment Requirements:
Essay should range in length from 9-12 pages, with a fully developed introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, as well as a works cited page (this is included in the length range). You will also include a 100-word abstract summarizing the essay’s argument, research questions, use of primary and secondary sources, and ultimate findings. Finally, you will include a 1-page reflection in which you discuss your experiences with this assignment (see below for more information about what you might include in your reflection).
You may select an appropriate citation format for the essay that corresponds to your major or to the disciplines with which you are engaging in the project. For example, APA, CMS, or MLA styles are all appropriate academic citation styles. If you are unsure of what format to use, or if you don’t want to practice a particular format, MLA Style is the default format for this course. If you have questions about citation styles, please consult the Seagull Handbook or the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL).
Essay title should reflect the essay’s argument.
Essay will focus on a clearly articulated thesis statement, which both advances an argument and explains why that argument is significant.
Essay will demonstrate skill in summary, analysis, and synthesis.
Essay will develop its argument using specific primary source examples, evidence, or data. Additionally, it will provide necessary context using a range of secondary sources, including scholarly, peer-reviewed articles and/or books as well as sources aimed at a general audience, from the perspectives of at least two academic disciplines.
Essay will synthesize examples, evidence, data, and context with the author’s original commentary.
Essay will represent the student’s own original work and will follow the guidelines for academic integrity. Students who do not meet the standards for academic integrity will face sanctions for plagiarism following university policy.
Essay should show evidence of careful drafting, revision, proofreading, and editing.
Tips for Drafting your Research Paper:
Use your proposal, and the feedback that you received on it, as a guide. Your proposal asked you to consider your purpose in writing this paper, the goals that you have for your research, the impact that you expect this research to make, and the research questions that drive your project. If you feel overwhelmed, return to your proposal for guidance.
Start with your primary source or sources. Whether your primary source is an artwork, a television series, a novel, survey data, experiment results, an interview, or something else, your analysis of primary source material is the most important contribution you will make to scholarship. Primary sources are of PRIMARY significance to your research paper. You may find when you look carefully at your primary source(s) that you need to refine or revise your research questions. That is ok! Let the data drive the research.
Use your annotated bibliography to help you keep track of your research and to organize your ideas. Before you begin writing, it can help to make a map (if you are more visual) or an outline (if you are more verbal) of which sources help you address given research questions or topics that you want to cover. Once you have identified where things go, you can break your work into more manageable “chunks” rather than feeling like you need to do everything all at once.
You can’t write this paper all in one night. You do not work best under pressure. You can budget your time and complete this assignment successfully over a period of weeks. You can complete this assignment without feeling super stressed out or anxious.
Don’t be shy! If you feel lost or like you are stuck, make an appointment to meet with Dr. Krouse, share your drafts with classmates and get their feedback, and/or make an appointment to visit the writing center. There is no virtue in struggling on your own instead of asking for help.
Suggestions for the Independent Research Project Reflection:
Using one or more of the below questions to prompt your analysis, write a 1-3 page reflection about your experiences with this research paper and the sequence of assignments connected to it.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in completing the assignments leading up to and including the research paper and presentation? Why? How did you handle the challenge and what did it teach you?
What are you most proud of in your work connected to this research paper? What do you think stands out as your greatest accomplishment? Why?
What did this assignment teach you about interdisciplinary approaches to answering questions using research? How do you think using multiple disciplines can help you to engage in more sophisticated analysis or problem-solving?
Does the work that you did inspire you to pursue this topic further? Why/why not? If you do think that you would like to do more with this topic, what would you like to do?
