Read carefully John Updike’s short story “A&P” and M. Gilbert Porter’s critical essay “John Updike’s ‘A&P’: The Establishment and an Emersonian Cashier.” In your critical essay, begin by briefly summarizing “A&P” (in only about 100 words). Then latch onto some specific assertion that Porter makes in his own essay. Give what he says some context. Then express your own opinion about this assertion.
