On my genogram, I used circles and squares to represent the three generations of where and how I came into this world. I used circles for the females and squares for the males. The first generation I did my maternal and paternal grandparents. My maternal grandmother is Carrie Robinson. My maternal grandfather is W.C. Wright. He is deceased now. My paternal grandmother is Charlene Atkinson. My paternal grandfather is Clinton Edison. My maternal grandparents were never married. My paternal grandparents were married but are now divorced. They received their divorce in1979. My mother’s name is Tiffany Hollins. She is now deceased. She died in 2004. My Father is Rumulus Edison. My parents were never married and only had one child which is me Jasmien Edison. My father is married to Jimishi Edison in 2010. I do not have any children or a spouse. The genogram reflects all the above.
My family norms on my paternal side is that we spend every holiday together. We cook and fellowship with one another. For Thanksgiving all my paternal family eats at my paternal grandmother’s house. On Christmas we all gather at my great aunt’s house to eat breakfast. We have practiced these traditions since before I was born. We have done this for over forty years. We are a very close unit. I am big on family because of the examples that were shown to me all throughout my life. On my maternal side I am very close to my immediate family. Unlike my paternal side they see each other everyday and live in walking distance of each other. I do not see them everyday because they live in a very rural are in central Texas. I only see them once or twice a year because I live in Alabama. It gets hard sometimes because out of everyone on the genogram I am the closes to my maternal grandmother. I talk to her every day, sometimes more than once a day. When I was seventeen, I made her a promise that I would stay in Alabama and get my associate and bachelor’s degree. I kept my promise and I finished both. After I received my bachelor’s degree, I decided to stay in Alabama and get my master’s degree. It was a hard decision because I wanted to move back to Texas to be closer to her, but ultimately it was the best decision for me. She understood and supported me, and it made her even more proud of me. On my maternal side I was the first to complete high school and the first to get a college degree. My grandmother was in tears because she was so proud of me and the accomplishments that I have made.
On both sides of my family there are significant health problem. There are diabetes and high blood pressure. Both of my grandmothers have diabetes and high blood pressure. They are constantly being treated for them. There has been no record of mental illness that I know of. There has been violence between my paternal grandparents. After that incident occurred, they filed for divorce.
I have witnessed the death of my mother and maternal grandmother. My mother died in 2002. She died from complication of Sickle Cell Anemia which I inherited. My grand father died in 2014. He died of Prostate cancer. These two deaths affected me in a major way. I am still grieving the death of my mother.
My maternal family lifestyle is to work hard. They understand that nothing in life is free and that you must work for any and everything that you receive on both sides we believe in religion and are Christians. We believe that God sent his son for us to have a better life. On my paternal side they are hard working as well, but they are more fortunate than my maternal side. I have seen both lifestyles and I take after both. I am very hard working and determine to become someone great. I think that I have developed good habits and concepts that I will take and use for the rest of my life. The genogram has shown me where I come from. The genogram also shown me how close I am to each family member. The genogram is a great to tell you things about yourself, your heritage, and social and economic challenges and strengths that has happen within every generation.
